My Iceland Adventure - Why This Incredible Destination Should Be on Your List

Kate Matthews on 03 July 2025
I’m currently lucky enough to be spending 10 days in Iceland, house- and cat-sitting for one of my lovely Icelandic suppliers. They’re the same trusted partners I use to arrange all the amazing day trips and excursions for my clients—whether it’s a guided tour from Reykjavik, a self-drive adventure around the island, or a small-group trip to hidden gems.

This is my second visit to Iceland—and it's quickly becoming one of my favourite destinations to recommend (and revisit!). I first came in winter, when the country was blanketed in snow and alive with Northern Lights, glaciers, and ice caves. This time, I’m here in July, soaking up the contrast of long summer days, dramatic green landscapes, and the midnight sun.

Having a car has made it even more special, allowing me to explore at my own pace—something I often suggest to clients who want a little freedom on their holiday but this can only be done in the summer months . I would not recomend self driving tours in the winter.

Why Iceland Might Be Just What You Need... Whether you're a couple looking for a romantic escape, a solo traveller craving a bucket-list experience, a group of friends seeking adventure, or a family after something a bit different—Iceland ticks every box.

From short weekend breaks in Reykjavik to longer road trips across the island, I can tailor your trip around your interests and time frame. Iceland truly is a year-round destination—and the beauty is, it never looks the same twice.

A Few of My Favourite Experiences (So Far!)...

Snorkelling in Silfra Fissure... This was a true once-in-a-lifetime experience! Snorkelling (or scuba diving!) at Silfra Fissure is an unforgettable experience. You're literally swimming between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The water, fed by the Langjökull glacier, has been filtered through lava fields for up to 200 years—creating visibility of up to 150 metres! It's absolutely surreal and a must-do.

The Golden Circle... This popular loop is perfect for anyone staying in Reykjavik for a short time. You’ll see Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area (yes, it erupts every few minutes!), and the majestic Gullfoss waterfall—all in one day. It’s a great option I often include for first-time visitors.

Kerið Crater... This volcanic crater lake in South Iceland is a quick detour from the Golden Circle—and absolutely worth it. The vibrant colours of the water and surrounding rock are just stunning.

Seljalandsfoss & Skógafoss Waterfalls... Two of the most beautiful waterfalls in the South. At Seljalandsfoss, you can walk behind the waterfall—so bring a waterproof! These stops fit perfectly into a South coast itinerary I love building for clients.

DC-3 Plane Wreck on Sólheimasandur Beach... This surreal site feels like you’ve stepped onto another planet. It’s dramatic, haunting, and very cool—especially if you’re into photography or love unique landscapes. This abandoned plane from a 1973 crash lies on a black sand beach between Skógafoss and Vík. Fun fact: Justin Bieber filmed parts of his I’ll Show You video here.

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach... Another South Coast gem. Famous for its striking basalt columns and sea stacks, it’s also one of the best places to spot puffins nesting in the cliffs during summer.

Hot Springs & Spas... Iceland is famous for its geothermal baths—and there are so many to choose from:

Blue Lagoon: Ideal for short breaks; you can even stop on the way from the airport!

Secret Lagoon: More rustic and hot springs like, often included in Golden Circle tours.

Sky Lagoon: Stylish and relaxing, just minutes from Reykjavik.

Hvammsvík Hot Springs: A peaceful, off-the-beaten-track option.

There are also dozens of natural hot springs hidden around the island—I’d be happy to point you toward the best ones!

When Should You Go?... Summer (July–Sept) – Long days, perfect weather, open hiking trails, and ideal for road trips. Winter (Oct–March) – Snowy landscapes, Northern Lights, ice caves, and snow-based adventures. Spring/Autumn (April–June, Sept) – Fewer crowds, mild weather, and great value.

Puffin Season? May–July is perfect. Let me help you plan the best spots to see them up close! Whale Watching Season - All year round

A Few Handy Tips... Iceland is on GMT year-round (no daylight saving)

Icelandic is the official language, but English is widely spoken

Currency: Icelandic Króna (ISK)

UK flight time: Approx. 3 hours
