Family Holidays in the French Alps: Why the Grand Massif is Perfect in Summer

When you think of the French Alps, skiing usually comes to mind. But did you know the Alps are just as spectacular in summer; especially for families? With warm sunshine, crystal-clear lakes, wildflower meadows, and safe mountainside villages, it’s the ideal spot for an active yet relaxing trip.

One of my family’s favourite areas is the Grand Massif, home to the beautiful alpine village of Samoëns. Reached from the UK in under two hours, by plane plus a short transfer from Geneva Airport, it’s one of the most accessible mountain regions for families with children.

Why Choose a Summer Holiday in the Alps?

Instead of long, hot days on the beach, the Alps offer endless adventure: lakeside swimming, gentle family hikes, cycling, zip-lining, pony trekking and more. The climate is warm but never overwhelming which is perfect for kids who want to play outdoors all day. Why the Grand Massif and Samoëns? The Grand Massif includes Samoëns, Morillon, Flaine, Les Carroz and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval, all within easy reach of each other. You’re also close to Chamonix, where you can ride a gondola towards Mont Blanc, Western Europe’s highest peak. Samoëns itself is a charming medieval village with cobbled streets, cafés, markets, and stunning views in every direction. It’s authentic, French, and very family-friendly, with lifts, lakes, and adventure activities right on the doorstep.

Best Family Activities in the Grand Massif

• Hiking with kids; gentle trails through meadows, waterfalls and valleys • Lakes & swimming; Lac Bleu in Morillon has a sandy beach, pedal boats, playgrounds, and treetop adventures • Adventure parks; zip lines, canyoning, and tree-top courses for older children and teens • Cycling & e-bikes; explore the valley at your own pace (e-bikes make the climbs fun for everyone) • Culture & relaxation; Samoëns’ weekly market, alpine food, and nearby villages like Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval

7-Day Family Itinerary for a French Alps Faily Holiday

Day 1: Arrival in Samoëns Fly to Geneva, transfer to Samoëns. Stay in a self-catered residence club MMV with pool and spa, or at a central family hotel like the Alexane. Explore the medieval streets, shops, and book activities.

Day 2: Gentle Alpine Hike & Picnic Drive to the Col de Joux Plane for a family-friendly hike near Les Gets and Morzine. A nice gentle hike to la Bourgeoise offers incredible views over the Giffre Valley and Mont Blanc. Pack a picnic and watch paragliders launch from the mountainside.

Day 3: Lakeside Fun at Lac Bleu Spend the day swimming, pony trekking, playing mini golf or tackling the treetop adventure park; all around this beautiful village lake.

Day 4: Adventure Sports Older children (and parents!) can try canyoning, rafting or tandem paragliding, while younger ones enjoy gentler local activities.

Day 5: Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval Nature Reserve Discover one of France’s most breathtaking reserves: dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, pony treks, and child-friendly trails. End with a hearty Savoyard meal like tartiflette at a local mountain restaurant.

Day 6: Cycling & Market Day Hire bikes or e-bikes to tour the valley. Later, visit Samoëns’ famous market, enjoy local music in the square, and dine at Brasserie Le Savoie; a relaxed, family-friendly favourite or ours.

Day 7: Relax & Depart Soak up the alpine views with a swim, short walk, or morning coffee before transferring back to Geneva for your flight home.

The Bottom Line A family holiday in Samoëns and the Grand Massif combines outdoor adventure with alpine charm. Whether your kids love swimming, cycling, or simply exploring new places, the French Alps in summer offer something unforgettable for everyone.
