Hello Japan! A Journey Through Culture, Chaos & Calm with Inside Japan Group
We kicked things off in Tokyo’s Asakusa district. Where honestly, I was expecting chaos, but instead I found calm. Peaceful streets, a gentle rhythm… totally unexpected vs. my preconception of what the city would feel like. Enter Carlo, our local Insider guide, who showed us the softer, greener side of Tokyo. Think tranquil gardens, sleepy residential alleys, and lunch in the tiniest, coziest steakhouse. Then, boom—contrast time! Off to Shibuya’s buzzing zebra crossing and finally, panoramic city views from Tokyo Skytree. I'm officially hooked.
Next Stop: Kanazawa – Castles, Gardens & Karaoke
My first ever bullet train ride, cruising at160mph! Arriving in Kanazawa, we kicked off with an amazing curry lunch “set” (so tasty and very kind on the pocket). Explored the stunning Kenrokuen Gardens, where we cooled off with some heavenly shaved ice. We wandered past the castle, dipped into the preserved samurai district, and wrapped up the evening cooking our own dinner—stepping out of my comfort zone, I dared to sample a few unusual things! Rounded things off with a cheeky drink and a song at a karaoke bar.
Kyoto Magic – Geisha, Temples & Custard-Filled Joy
Oh Kyoto, you had me at “hello.” After exploring the town centre and devouring a spicy beef noodle broth, we tried a delightful local sweet—a warm, custard-filled fish-shaped pastry. Heaven. In the Gion district, we had the absolute honour of meeting with a Maiko (a young lady who is a Geiko in training). She shared her journey, danced for us, poured matcha tea, and even played a traditional game. With our wonderful Insider translator & guide Finn, we took an authentic peek behind the curtain of Kyoto and it’s lasting Edo culture. Later, we met with Sae from Arigato Tours, for a personal introduction to Kyoto’s foodie wonderland. I’d certainly have missed half the delicacies we tried if we were without her guidance. Highly recommended.
Sophia, our Insider guide for the next day, whisked us to explore some of Kyoto’s hidden gems. A serene temple tucked between modern buildings, the mossy magic of Ginkakuji and the Silver Pavillion, with its gardens that felt like they stretched up into the clouds. Lunch was conveyor belt sushi—interesting choices available for the brave! Fresh and delicious, I really enjoyed all the Sushi and Sashimi we tried throughout the whole trip. We temple-hopped (with storytelling at every location, thanks again for sharing your passion and knowledge Sophia!), We shopped for kimonos, and ended the night with ramen, gyoza, and a gloriously colourful G&T. I'm officially in love with Kyoto.
Kinosaki Onsen – Naked and Unashamed
We caught the train to Kinosaki Onsen today, with our “Eki-Ben” bento boxes in tow (picking the right one was the hardest decision all day!) You’ll find these for sale at every large station. Once we had settled into our traditional room, at Nishimuraya Hotel Shogetsutei, we slipped into the provided Yukata’s and headed downstairs for our first Onsen experience. Yes, you’ll need to leave your flip flops, and your inhibitions at the door. Just do it. It's oddly freeing. Trust me. I promise you will love the zingy “after Onsen” feeling that follows.
Osaka – Neon Dreams & Karaoke Queens
From Zen to ZAP—hello Osaka! Hectic, high-rise, and lit up like a pinball machine. We stayed at the cool Cross Hotel, just minutes from the subway. If we’d had more time, I’d definitely have booked a guided street food tour here. This city is Japan’s kitchen, after all. Back with our guide Finn, we checked out Dotonbori area, kitchen street, and Osaka Castle. Dinner? At an aquarium you say? Nemo spotting heaven! Then it was karaoke time—private booth, 3 hours of singing, sipping, and laughing out loud. Safe to say, my singing career won’t be taking off… but what a night!
Back to Tokyo – Trains, Treats & Golden Gai
Zipped back to Tokyo on the Speedy Shinkansen—on time, clean, comfy. Japan’s train system is a dream. Stations may look chaotic, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it all just works. Our final night was spent at the ultra-cool Groove Shinjuku, surrounded by buzzing nightlife and the famous Golden Gai alleys. Our Insider Guide Fergal helped us conquer rush hour, pointed us to awesome souvenir shops, and made our last afternoon in Tokyo a breeze. Dinner was epic, a delicious feast at Omotenashi Toriyoshi Nishi Shinjuku. After dinner we discovered a tiny bar that literally just fit all 10 of group inside! I ordered Sake (just the one!), spirits were high, and we toasted our unforgettable journey through Japan.
If you'd like help planning your own Japanese escape, I’d love to help. I’ve returned full of tips, ideas, and first-hand know-how. Big love and massive thanks to Inside Japan and all their amazing Insider Guides for the experience of a lifetime.
