Blissful Break in Tenerife
Short Break to Tenerife in April
They say a change is as good as a rest, but I say: why not have both? This April I swapped Yorkshire’s drizzle for five glorious nights beneath the Tenerife sun, and what a tonic it was! The excitement built as soon as myself and my sister boarded my flight from Leeds–Bradford, daydreaming about swapping counting sheep for palm trees. Touching down in Tenerife, that famous warmth (and not just from the sun) enveloped me before I even reached the hotel.
Our base for the week was the wonderful 4* Ole Tropical. Think: a contemporary adults-only retreat with a laid-back but lively vibe, just steps from the best bars, restaurants, and palm-lined beaches of Playa de las Américas. There’s something joyfully indulgent about waking up, ambling down for breakfast, and realising the hardest decision of your day is: bar, sunbed, or stroll? Let’s talk about the food – fabulous, fresh, and a daily temptation. Crisp salads, grilled seafood, glorious Spanish desserts… and yes, free-flowing San Miguel! (If only the beer taps were more portable, I’d have considered slipping one in my hand luggage for the return flight!)
One of our favourite simple pleasures was walking along the palm-fringed promenade, breathing in sea air, watching the world go by. People-watching becomes an art form here – especially with the steady rhythm of the waves and the odd serenade from a passing musician. No trip to Tenerife would be complete without a rendezvous with its most impressive residents. Setting sail from Los Cristianos, we joined a brilliant whale-watching tour. Seeing pilot whales and dolphins gliding alongside us was pure magic. My photos don’t do it justice (but my enthusiastic commentary definitely entertained the other guests!). For a special treat, we ventured to Biancos on the Golden Mile. Let’s just say that between flawless Italian cuisine, glowing fairy lights, and a side order of people-watching, I was in my element. The cocktails almost had us dancing up the avenue…!!
Why Tenerife? The island offers so much more than just year round sunshine and sangria (although both were in generous supply). It’s a place where every holidaymaker carves out their own version of paradise: lazy pool days, thrilling island adventures, culinary delights, and a relaxed pace that soothes the soul.
