Safari Dreams Come True: My Stay at Kapama River Lodge’s Buffalo Camp, Greater Kruger
The Greater Kruger region is where luxury and untamed wilderness meet. Unlike the public Kruger National Park, private reserves like Kapama offer exclusive safari experiences with off-road game viewing, fewer vehicles at sightings, and personalised attention from expert rangers and trackers. It’s ideal for anyone seeking a more immersive, tailored safari experience.
From the moment I arrived at Buffalo Camp, I knew this wasn’t your average safari lodge. Nestled beneath a canopy of indigenous trees, the camp is made up of elevated luxury tents connected by wooden walkways: perfectly blending into the surrounding bush. There are just ten tents, making it a peaceful and intimate retreat, ideal for couples, solo travellers, or anyone wanting a quiet, close-to-nature experience without sacrificing comfort.
The décor is elegant and understated, with leather furnishings, copper fittings, and vintage touches that evoke the spirit of early safari adventures, yet with modern luxuries like air conditioning, a deep soaking tub, and a private deck.
Each day at Buffalo Camp began and ended with a game drive, and they were the absolute highlight of the trip. Our ranger and tracker duo were not only highly knowledgeable but also incredibly passionate about the bush. We saw the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo), along with zebras, giraffes, hippos, and countless antelope species.
One standout moment? A close-up sighting of three lionesses 'on the kill' less than 3 metres away from our vehicle: totally once-in-a-liftetime.
Dining at Kapama is an experience in itself. Whether it was breakfast in the bush, lunch in the spa, or dinner under a canopy of stars in the boma, every meal was thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented. The chefs even surprised us with a traditional South African braai (barbecue) one evening; complete with storytelling and song by the local staff.
What truly sets Kapama apart is its attention to detail and warm hospitality. The staff go above and beyond to ensure every guest feels welcome, remembered, and completely cared for. As someone who helps others plan their dream holidays, I pay close attention to this, and Kapama exceeded every expectation.
Whether you’re planning your first safari or your tenth, Kapama’s Buffalo Camp offers something truly special. It’s perfect for travellers seeking:
An authentic but luxurious safari experience Intimate lodging with personalised service Exceptional wildlife viewing with expert guides Seamless travel connections (Kapama has its own airstrip and is near Hoedspruit airport)
