See Victoria Falls and Zimbabwe

On a recent visit to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, I was lucky enough to visit the falls again that I had seen in November 2023. At the time I was told that the best time of year to see the waterfalls is in May, as the water levels are then at their highest and the falls are even more spectacular.

So, I took the opportunity to go and visit again, this time on an early morning guided walk around the rainforest and on to the falls. Our guide Garth made getting up early (0500 am) very worthwhile with his stories about the life and exploits of David Livingstone, as did the amazing sight that we were rewarded with once the sun rose over the spectacular water masses roaring down the rocks.

Enjoying a coffee with Amarula to wake us up, standing at one of the lookout points waiting for the sun to rise, is an experience I will not easily forget. Our small group of 5 stood mesmerised, cameras at the ready, to record the amazing sight of sunrise over Victoria Falls. Even the pictures can only try to give you a sense of what that morning was like.

We had been warned to make sure we had a change of clothes as we would get wet, and despite Garth handing us ponchos, we did get soaked, cameras, phones and all. Still, I would not have missed this for the world, it’s only water after all and it dries quickly enough once the sun gets to full strength. Despite Zimbabwe in May meaning Autumn, the temperatures during the day were in the region of 28 degrees centigrade, I would take that any day, even in summer.

Because you are in the rainforest, there is great birdlife to be seen as well as a few cheeky monkeys.

Of course, the town of Victoria Falls is not just the spectacular waterfalls, there is much more to see and do like a cruise on the river, which I took in the afternoon. Leisurely floating along the Zambezi, whilst enjoying a drink and some nibbles, is the perfect ending to a busy day. Many operators offer the excursion, so it’s all down to personal preference who you want to book with. My choice was Pure Africa’s offering. They offer Sunrise, Lunch, Sunset and Dinner cruises, and each time of day brings the river to life in its own way. Both the Luxury Deck and the Signature Deck option include canapés and drinks, but the Signature Deck option offers seating on the top deck with unobstructed views of the river from 6m up, with comfortable deep-set couches that reflect the earthy tones and river blues found in the surroundings. Enjoy uninterrupted views, delicious canapés and the service of a dedicated mixologist. A range of premium wines, beer and artisanal spirits are also available throughout.

For those that like adventure activities, there is bungee jumping, the Gorge Swing, white water rafting and the Zambezi zipline, as well as helicopter trips over the falls. Those that are interested in wildlife encounters can explore Hwange National Park, visit the Elephant sanctuary, get involved in vulture feeding or explore the black rhino project run by Stanley and Livingstone hotel, or take a day trip to Chobe National Park in Botswana.

Visit Livingstone on the Zambian side of the border, enjoy an afternoon tea in the Victoria Falls hotel, ride the Bamba tram or, at the right time of year, visit Livingstone Island and enjoy a dip in the Devil’s Pool. These are just a few of the activities available when visiting Victoria Falls. For any help with booking this, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
