Central Portugal: Quiet Luxury, Big Waves and Even Bigger Hospitality
I have just returned from a curated journey through the heart of Central Portugal and it has firmly established itself, in my mind, as one of Europe’s most exciting options for a special, luxury escape. Think wild Atlantic coastline, characterful small towns, historic wine villages and a food and wine scene that massively overdelivers, all wrapped up in warm, genuine Portuguese hospitality.
Santa Cruz: Eco‑Chic On The Atlantic Coast
The journey began on the Atlantic coast at Santa Cruz, where long sandy beaches meet dramatic cliffs and powerful ocean swells. It feels wonderfully wild and remote, yet is still within easy reach of Lisbon.

My base here was Areias do Seixo, a design‑driven, eco‑chic retreat that really set the tone for the whole trip. This is not a typical beach hotel: it is a place where sustainability, architecture and heartfelt service come together beautifully.
- Design‑led suites with natural materials and thoughtful details
- Firelit lounges perfect for winding down with a glass of wine
- A tranquil spa hidden behind wooden doors
- Garden‑to‑table dining using ingredients from the hotel’s own organic gardens

Time by the ocean, walking the sands and simply listening to the waves, really highlighted how magical and restorative this stretch of coast can be.

Nazaré: Giant Waves & Genuine Warmth
From Santa Cruz, I continued north to Nazaré, a former fishing village that has become globally famous for some of the biggest waves on the planet. Even if you are not a surfer, the energy of this place is extraordinary.
A private boat trip along the coastline gave a real sense of the power and drama of the Atlantic here. The highlight was an unexpected one: we had the privilege of meeting the world record‑holding big wave surfer who helped put Nazaré on the global map, which brought the area’s surf legend to life in a very personal way.
Back on shore, Nazaré revealed a softer side. A relaxed seafood lunch overlooking the ocean showcased everything that is so special about Portuguese coastal gastronomy:
- Ultra‑fresh fish and seafood
- Simple, honest plates that let the ingredients speak
- Friendly, unpretentious service
- Endless sea views
It is the kind of place where “lunch with a view” easily becomes a long, leisurely afternoon.

Santar & The Dão: Wine, Gardens and Slow Living
Leaving the coast behind, the journey moved inland into the Dão wine region, where the pace naturally slows and the focus shifts to wine, heritage and quiet moments.
I stayed in the aristocratic village of Santar, a place of granite manor houses, stone walls, fountains and terraces, all surrounded by vineyards and mountain views. My home here was Valverde Santar Hotel & Spa, a beautifully restored historic residence with just 21 rooms and suites.
This intimate property is perfect for clients who value:
- Boutique luxury with a strong sense of place
- Elegant, individually styled rooms
- Sculpted gardens and peaceful corners for reading or a glass of wine
- A focus on wellbeing, calm and understated service
Wine is part of everyday life in Santar. Visits to wineries such as Quinta da Taboadella gave a fascinating insight into the Dão region, known for its elegant, food‑friendly wines. Combining vineyard tours with tastings made it easy to appreciate just how characterful and refined these wines can be.

One of the real highlights was a guided visit to Santar Garden Village. Behind the stone walls of the village lies a network of interconnected historic gardens and vineyard plots, usually hidden from view. Walking through them felt like stepping into a series of secret worlds, each with its own mood, but all tied together by landscape, history and wine.

A Michelin‑Starred Love Letter To The Region
A standout evening of the trip was dinner at Michelin‑starred Mesa de Lemos, located in nearby Quinta de Lemos. Here, Chef Diogo Rocha, of Portugal MasterChef fame, creates tasting menus that are deeply rooted in local ingredients and traditions, yet presented in a modern, elegant way.
Course after course, it genuinely felt like a love letter to the region:
- Local, often rediscovered ingredients
- Beautifully balanced dishes, full of flavour and finesse
- Thoughtful wine pairings showcasing the best of Dão
- Serene vineyard views completing the experience
For food‑loving clients, this is exactly the kind of destination restaurant that can elevate a trip from “lovely” to truly memorable.

Viseu: A City With Heart
The journey concluded in Viseu, a luminous, walkable city often described as the heart of the Dão wine region. It is a place made for wandering:
- Cobbled streets and traditional buildings
- Tiled facades and leafy squares
- A historic centre filled with churches, museums and viewpoints
Exploring the cathedral square, the Grão Vasco National Museum and the graceful Misericórdia Church brought the region’s history and culture into focus. Viseu manages to feel both lived‑in and relaxed, giving a real sense of everyday Portuguese life beyond the more familiar coastal cities.

Why Central Portugal Works So Well For A Luxury Escape
What really impressed me about Central Portugal is the way it balances contrast and character:
- Wild Atlantic coastline and serene wine country
- Soulful small towns and sophisticated boutique hotels
- Distinctive wine estates and destination dining
- A strong sense of heritage alongside fresh, creative energy
Above all, everything is underpinned by warmth and authenticity. Luxury here is not about showiness. It is about space, time, flavour, connection and the feeling of being genuinely welcomed.
