Sailing the Caribbean & Central America
NCL Encore
I’ve just returned from an incredible sailing on NCL Encore, travelling with my fellow Travel Counsellors, and I wanted to share the journey in more depth. Whether you’re considering a similar itinerary yourself or looking for reassurance about this style of cruise for your clients, this trip delivered on every level.
Getting There: Direct from Heathrow to Miami
We began with a direct flight from London Heathrow to Miami with Virgin Atlantic, an excellent option for UK travellers wanting a smooth, single‑hop journey before boarding their ship.
On arrival in Miami, we stayed one night pre‑cruise, which I would strongly recommend:
- It allows time to recover from the flight
- It adds a mini city‑break feel to the holiday
- It removes the stress of same‑day flight delays
An overnight stay also means the holiday mindset begins before you even step onboard.
Miami is a destination in its own right, and even with limited time we managed a wonderful mix of guided touring and relaxed exploration.
Walking Tour of Miami
I joined a guided walking tour, which is a great way to get your bearings and understand the stories behind Miami’s famous neighbourhoods. This is ideal for travellers who enjoy:
- History and architecture
- Local insight from a knowledgeable guide
- A relaxed pace with time for photos
Big Bus Tour: Maximum Sightseeing, Minimum Stress
We also hopped on the Big Bus Tour, perfect when time is short but there’s a lot to see. From the open‑top deck we took in:
- The iconic Art Deco hotels of South Beach
- The colourful street art of Wynwood
- The vibrant atmosphere of Little Havana, with its music, cafés and cigar shops
For clients who like flexibility and want to see the highlights without navigating a busy city themselves, hop‑on, hop‑off tours are an excellent option.
After our night in Miami, it was time to board NCL Encore and begin the cruise.
The ship itself offers:
- A contemporary, upbeat atmosphere
- A wide choice of dining, bars and lounges
- Both lively venues and quieter spaces, allowing guests to tailor each day to their mood
What really makes this itinerary shine, however, is the balance between relaxing sea days and port days packed with memorable experiences.
Our first major highlight was Belize, where I joined the Howler Monkey River Tour — an experience I won’t forget.
Picture gliding along a jungle‑lined river, the air warm and still, surrounded by lush greenery. Then, echoing through the trees, the deep, almost otherworldly call of the howler monkeys.
On this tour we:
- Travelled by boat through dense jungle scenery
- Spotted wildlife along the riverbanks
- Heard and saw howler monkeys in their natural habitat
This is a true “pinch‑me” experience and a fantastic contrast to beach‑only holidays. It’s particularly well suited to:
- Wildlife lovers
- Families with older children or teenagers
- Couples looking for something memorable and different
For anyone hesitant about adventure‑style excursions, this is immersive but very accessible — no extreme activity, just a beautifully guided journey through nature.
Honduras: Private Touring for a More Personal Experience
Our stop in Honduras stood out thanks to a private tour, which offers a very different experience compared with large group excursions.
The benefits of private touring include:
- Pace: move at your own speed and linger where you wish
- Personalisation: guides can adapt the focus based on interests
- Comfort: fewer people and a more relaxed, conversational feel
This allowed us to really appreciate the scenery and local culture without feeling rushed. It’s an excellent option for clients celebrating a special occasion or those who value privacy and comfort.
In Grand Cayman, we again opted for a private tour, which revealed far more than the immediate port area.
While the island is famous for its white sand and turquoise waters, exploring further allows visitors to discover:
- Local viewpoints and quieter coastal spots
- Locations often missed on mass‑market tours
- More meaningful time with a guide and insight into island life
For premium and luxury travellers, private tours like this can transform a standard cruise stop into something that feels genuinely tailor‑made.
After visiting Belize, Honduras and Grand Cayman, we returned to Miami for the final night.
I joined another walking tour and revisited favourite areas we’d seen earlier in the trip. Ending the cruise here gave a lovely sense of familiarity and is something I’d recommend to clients who want to:
- Revisit a neighbourhood they enjoyed pre‑cruise
- Fit in some last‑minute shopping or photography
- Enjoy one final cocktail or meal with a view before flying home
Final Thoughts
This sailing on NCL Encore delivered a superb blend of city exploration, relaxing sea days and genuinely memorable shore experiences. With the right planning — from pre‑cruise nights to carefully chosen excursions — this itinerary works beautifully for couples, families and clients looking for something more than a fly‑and‑flop holiday. If you’re considering a similar cruise, or would like advice on tailoring an itinerary like this to your own travel style, I’d be delighted to help.
