Intrepid adventures and the finer things in life might not go hand in hand but you don’t have to forego sumptuous sheets and gourmet cuisine to be an explorer these days!
Read on to discover far-flung destinations where you’ll find more than a little luxury…
Peru on the Belmond Andean Explorer
Imagine a journey that combines the charm of opulent train travel from decades gone by with the dazzling landscape of South America. Welcome aboard the new Belmond Andean Explorer.
With space for 48 passengers, South America’s first luxury sleeper train offers one- and two-night itineraries in Peru. You’ll be nestled amongst Peruvian textiles, modern comforts and the exquisite luxury you’d expect from a Belmond train (the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is also part of the Belmond collection). And your adventure will take you to Cusco, Colca Canyon, Lake Titicaca, and more.
Uganda to see mountain gorillas
What could be more adventurous than searching for one of the animal kingdom’s most incredible creatures?
Head to the brilliant green rainforests in Uganda to spot endangered mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.
Having been on Travel Counsellor Beverley’s travel wish list for a while, she finally went on a gorilla trek and said it was an outstanding experience: “Words cannot describe what it feels like to sit in the presence of such powerful yet gentle animals and how you feel when they look at you, or in my case, try to nab your camera. Uganda is a special country with so much more to see than just gorillas but this experience should be on everyone’s wish list.”
And for accommodation? You’ll find beautiful lodges and luxury tented camps in the wilderness.
Asia on a tall ship
Travelling across the seven seas always seems a little more adventurous than soaring through the air, doesn’t it? And if you’re picturing a giant wooden vessel cutting through the waves, sails billowing through the air, it’s time to step aboard a tall ship!
With mahogany panels, dining rooms, swimming pools, libraries, and modern luxuries, you’ll find luxury amid these tall ships that evoke years gone by.
While the tall ships travel far and wide, from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean, there’s something special about exploring the glorious blue waters and islands of Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
As Travel Counsellor Tanuja says, the mystery of the Galápagos Islands and the wonders to be found here are part of their charms, “part mystery and part curiosity, I have always been intrigued by the wildlife, flora and fauna of this group of volcanic islands.”
Added to this charm, is the task of getting to these islands, nestled in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Ecuador. And one of the best ways to explore the Galápagos Islands is by boat.
There are different types of ships to choose from, but you’ll find luxurious vessels complete with balconies, gourmet cuisine and cocktails while you watch the sun set.
What adventures will you find in the Galápagos Islands? Tanuja says, “Walk along desert trails with their own species of salt bushes and cacti to find iguanas sunning themselves. In the central highlands amongst the trees and green vegetation find giant tortoises. Lava rock formations and cliffs are home to birds found only here like the blue-footed boobies, red-footed boobies, the waved albatross and the Galapagos hawk. Stroll along sandy beaches amongst the seal colonies and swim in turquoise seas – if you’re lucky you could meet a seal, sea turtle or penguin playing in the water! Under the water marvel at the untouched coral reefs and shoals of tropical fish, manta rays and baby sharks.”
Canada for a luxury retreat in the snow
Whether you’re a skier or simply love to curl up by the fire, a snowy adventure in Canada offers plenty for both thrill-seekers and anyone hoping to dabble with exploring!
The Rocky Mountaineer train is a charming and luxurious way to see the landscape or you could head to a town or city and base your adventure from there. There are lots of options for a luxurious stay, from lodges to boutique hotels, depending on the area you visit.
If you’re heading to the Rockies, Fairmont Banff Springs is a breathtaking castle-style hotel perched in the beautiful scenery surrounding Banff, while Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise lies on the shores of the mesmerising, bright blue Lake Louise.
