Explore Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat temple complex is a national icon, a symbol of the ancient Khmer dynasties that once ruled Cambodia and are today considered, informally at least, as an eighth wonder of the world. You’ll get the chance to see its steps and towers lit up by the rising sun, as well as the opportunity to learn about its storied past from local guides, from its construction in the 12th century through to the reliefs that have been beautifully preserved. Angkor Wat reflects Mount Meru, the abode of Hindu gods, and inside you can see intricate carvings showcasing Hindu myths, with over 2,000 Apsara dancers gracing the walls.

Discover the Great Khmer Empire’s last capital

It’s the most famous of them all, but Angkor Wat isn’t the only temple close to Siem Reap. Far from it. On guided tours, you can see some of the lesser-known, yet equally fascinating, complexes. Early in the morning, set off to Ta Prohm in an army-style jeep and be one of the first visitors when it opens. Enter a world that remains largely overgrown by jungle and take a moment to appreciate the tranquility of its halls, where dappled sunlight breaks through the canopy. You’ll also visit Angkor Thom, the Great Khmer Empire’s last capital. Here, you’ll find Bayon temple, where you can gaze up at its 52 towers with enigmatic faces looking out over the vast provinces of the Great Khmer Empire.

Enjoy daybreak on Tonle Sap

Tonle Sap is the largest lake in Southeast Asia and a vital ecosystem at the heart of Cambodia. Its banks, which teem with birdlife, are home to floating villages and stilt houses, where traditional fishermen still work the water each morning. Take it all in from aboard a luxury boat at daybreak.

You’ll also have time to immerse yourself in the fast pace of Phnom Penh and learn about the Cambodian capital’s rebirth after the dark years of the Khmer Rouge with a trip to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - a must for all visitors to this resurgent country.

A riverside stay in the Cardamom Rainforest

Found deep within the Cardamom Rainforest, one of the region’s last untouched wildernesses, Shinta Mani Wild allows you to experience a totally different side of Cambodia. You can choose to arrive in style, zooming over the treetops on a 400-metre zip wire. From your base at this luxury resort, take a kayak onto the winding waterways and watch as colourful bee-eater birds swoop through the trees. Head out on an expedition boat through ancient mangroves, and enjoy sundowners on a rock above a roaring river. Paired with one of Shinta Mani Wild’s luxurious riverside tents, you’ll feel as close as possible to the restorative power of nature.

End with an exclusive island escape

Just off the southwest coast of Cambodia, Koh Krabey is the perfect place to take a breath after a mind-blowing adventure exploring everything the country has to offer. Our pick is a stay at the island’s ultra-luxe Six Senses resort, where each of the 16 private villas has its own infinity pool set among the trees and looking out over the Gulf of Thailand. Spend time kicking back on the beach, go snorkelling, and make time for a Khmer herbal massage in the spa. You’ll leave replenished, ending your adventure in the best way possible.
