Boston fam trip

23 November 2011

I was lucky enough to take part in a ‘Familiarisation’ trip to Boston and it couldn’t have started better with the opportunity to sample the Virgin Club Wing and Clubhouse where we enjoyed the amazing ‘Red Head’ cocktail too. It was first class all the way, from the minute we went into the incredible lounge. Exceptionally trendy with so many staff, we were greeted with cocktails after our V.I.P check in into the lounge. There was a huge bar and deli, even an upstairs garden area view of the airport with swinging garden chairs. A very relaxing way to start a flight. We were lucky enough to be upgraded to Upper Class with large seats that turned into fully flatbed. We were also upgraded to Premium on the way back and the seats were far larger than I expected, so it was easy to have a good sleep. In economy class, the seats were also a good size. We all had a drink at the bar, which had a very sociable area and atmosphere. The flight attendants were also really friendly. Time flew by. The transfer was only ten minutes and we arrived to check into the Taj hotel, which is a very traditional olde world hotel but in a high class way. From the chandeliers to the Chanel shop the hotel was very elegant and has a great central location. My room had two very comfortable queen beds, was very clean, had Molton Brown toiletries in the bathroom and again was in keeping with the hotel’s very traditional decor. We met for dinner with the hotel manager Greg. The food was amazing and very well presented especially the Creme Brûlée. We had breakfast and fellow Travel Counsellor Katharine had her eggs (with no yolk as requested!) It was then off to the Duck Tour, and when our guide Ray said Snoop Dog, we all had to say ‘Quack’ (the poor people in Boston!) This was a fantastic way to see Boston on the road and Ray was very chatty and knowledgeable. The architecture was stunning especially Beacon Hill, with its boutique type shops and buildings. The Duck/Bus then drove to the harbour and went into the water. The kids on the bus all had a turn to drive and I would strongly recommend this. Next it was time for some serious shopping. High heeled boots were not a good idea, so some great value UGG boots were purchased. We visited the Prudential Mall & Copley Square, but the great find was Filenes & Marshall’s which was near the hotel and sold discounted designer wear which was great for presents. The hotel bar area was very cosy, like being in a large dark oak living room. The older barmen serving were lovely (it was like being looked after in your Grandad's front room). The Club Lounge in the hotel is a must. For $100 per room you can do this daily and enjoy breakfast, afternoon tea, and the exclusive bar. It’s a fantastic add on. The views from the hotel were incredible, overlooking Boston Common. We went to 28 degrees for a meal (28 degrees is the correct temperature for a Martini!) Really funky and it reminded me of the Armani Hotel bar in Dubai. The food was delicious. You can't go to Boston without visiting Cheers so that was next on the agenda. Well, he didn’t know our name ;-) so after a few renditions of the theme of Cheers we went back to the hotel to get up bright and early for sightseeing and of course shopping. I was lucky enough to have two very good shopping buddies in Karen and Katharine. Abercrombie was hit hard for Christmas presents for the kids, and I had that many bags, I came home like Pretty Woman! A great end to a great trip.
