Exploring the Kii Peninsula and the Nasu Highlands

Japan is a land of contrasts, where towering neon-lit skyscrapers meet tranquil ancient temples. But beyond these iconic sights lies a world waiting to be discovered—a world of lesser-explored regions that showcase Japan's hidden magic.

Exploring the Kii Peninsula and the Nasu Highlands

For those craving a true sense of adventure and tranquillity away from the busy cities, we’re here to guide you into the enchanting corners of Japan. Picture the remote, misty peaks of the Kii Peninsula in Kansai, offering a serene escape south of Osaka and Kyoto. Or immerse yourself in the lush beauty of the Nasu Highlands in Tochigi Prefecture, tucked in the northeast of Tokyo. With our expertise, we make venturing off the beaten track seamless, ensuring you experience the very essence of Japan—and all without the stress of planning.

Mie Prefecture

With its vast protected areas and 1,000km of Pacific coastline, Mie on the far east of the peninsula offers unique experiences, including sacred nature hikes and bathing in onsens (private hot springs), plus high-end accommodation and temple stays. This was the birthplace of ninjas, and you can learn all about Ninja culture in the Ninja Museum of Igaryu, as well as join in with interactive ninja workshops.

Of the islands in Toba Bay, Mikimoto Pearl Island is a great place to learn about local pearl cultivation and you can even enjoy an Ama diving experience. Amas are female free divers who use traditional means to collect pearls, as well as harvest shellfish and seaweed. You can try on their diving outfits, learn about their ancient customs, and eat fresh charcoal-grilled seafood with them.

Nara Prefecture

South of Kyoto, Nara is home to Mount Yoshino, the slopes of which are covered with thousands of blooming cherry trees each spring. It’s part of the Yoshino Kumano National Park, one of the most spectacular parts of which is the Dorokyo Gorge – popular for thrilling activities such as rafting, canoeing, cycling, and fishing, as well as riding down the gorge in a kawabune kawasemi riverboat.

Wakayama Prefecture

On the west of the peninsula, south of Osaka, Wakayama is home to Koyasan (Mount Kōya), which is the birthplace of Shingon Buddhism, with more than 100 temples dotted amidst the peaks. Among the unforgettable things to do here is a Koyasan Okuno-in night tour of one of Koyasan’s most sacred sites, with a licensed guide, hearing stories about Kobo Daishi/Kukai, the temples’ founder.

You can also hike the ancient Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Route running south from Tanabe along the coast to Fudarakusan-ji Temple, now UNESCO World Heritage-listed. Along the way, you can add variety to your trip with visits to Koyasan, Nachi Falls, and Asuka Village, home of Japan’s first emperor.

The Nasu Highlands

Centred on Mount Nasu, a cluster of volcanic mountains with some of the region's best hot springs, this tranquil area is the perfect retreat after a visit to hectic Tokyo. One of the most memorable experiences here is hiking Mount Nasu, which has trails suitable for all levels as well as the Nanatsuiwa pedestrianised suspension bridge, offering the most stupendous views.

Among the best thermal springs towns here are Nasu Onsen and Shiobara Onsen. From the latter, there’s a lovely hike to the 60-metre-high cascading Ryuka Falls (Ryuka no Taki), which some say resembles a flying dragon. The Nasu Highlands is also a wonderful spot for foodies, with artisan cheese producers and microbreweries you can visit to enjoy tastings of their wares.
