Make memories in the Maldives with the family

As the Maldives is becoming a popular choice with families, not just couples, Sun Siyam Iru Fushi stands out as an especially brilliant resort for those with kids for a whole array of reasons. One of them is that it counts under-15s as children (at most resorts it’s under-12s), and they not only stay for free with two paying adults when staying in the same room, but they also enjoy the same board basis free of charge.

Make memories in the Maldives with the family

Added to this are the fantastic value of Iru Fushi’s all-inclusive packages and the sheer thrill of even getting there aboard one of the colourful Sun Siyam seaplanes with their famous barefoot or flip flop-clad pilots.

Iru Fushi is also one of our favourite resorts for being part of the locally owned and run Sun Siyam group of hotels. Set up by an inspirational Noonu Atoll islander who has been insistent on rooting his properties in their communities, the warmth of it’s incredible staff makes guests feel like part of the family. Here’s what makes Sun Siyam Iru Fushi so wonderful for children of all ages – and for the grown-ups who bring them there!

The best room types for families at Sun Siyam Iru Fushi

You can choose between beach and overwater villas – all with the luxury of butler service and 24-hour room service. Some have up to three bedrooms, making them perfect for holidaying with teens or for multigenerational holidays. Which should you go for? It’s an enviable choice. The beachfront villas sleep up to five and all have an ocean-view beach cabana, and some have a pool. The overwater villas also sleep up to five – some, again, with a pool and others with an ocean-view hot tub. If there are more of you, you’ll want to bag one of the Retreat villas with pools, beach cabanas, fitness and games areas, kitchenettes, and personal butlers; one also has the indulgence of a private spa.

Family facilities at Sun Siyam Iru Fushi

There’s so much to keep the children entertained here, from an impressive family pool complete with paddling area for little ones, a kids’ underwater park in the lagoon, mini golf, and an exciting kids’ club that helps children aged 3–12 years old explore the island.  While they’re busy making new friends, you can make a beeline for the adult-only infinity pool or the gorgeous award-winning Spa by Thalgo France for some much-needed alone time.

An incredible 15 restaurants and bars at this resort means you’ll never go short of something new to try out, and there’s something on offer for all ages and tastes. The main buffet restaurant Iru is ideal as it has a family area, a kids’ buffet at dinner, and a play area, as well as a beach terrace. Younger guests particularly love La Cremeria ice-cream parlour and the fun Japanese iron-griddle restaurant Teppanyaki.

How to spend an unforgettable holiday at Sun Siyam Iru Fushi

There are all kinds of exciting activities for all ages to try, either together or solo. You can go for a ‘snorkel safari’ on the house reef (‘Nemo’s reef’ has cute clownfish and turtles), head out on a cruise to see dolphins, and there are many cultural outings to the surrounding area, such as helping children at the village school practise English or spending a day with local fishermen who supply the resort’s restaurants.

The Sun Siyam Group also stands out for being eco-minded, with Travelife/Global Sustainable Tourism Council certification recognising its many initiatives. And Iru Fushi’s crafts sessions invite you to get involved by upcycling some of the island’s palm leaves, wood, and coconut shells. There are also complimentary nature walks to learn about the island’s spectacular animal and plant life, including geckos and the remarkably cute fruit bats.
