Our favourite Corsican villas for summer fun

This rugged French island is one of our favourite Mediterranean destinations: low-key, rustic and with an Italian feel in parts. A place of fragrant maquis, craggy peaks, wonderful wildlife including soaring red kites, and stylish seaside resorts, it’s a great option for those who want to kick back and relax in a villa of their own within easy reach of the island’s sights – the current capital Ajaccio, birthplace of Napoléon Bonaparte; the ancient capital Corte; Bastia with its lively Old Port; Calvi on its crescent-shaped bay; and quaint villages to explore and not forgetting Porto Vecchio, the chic southern town and harbour providing easy access to the most wonderful beaches.

Our favourite Corsican villas for summer fun

Villa Bumortu

With glorious views over the Gulf of Valinco, especially when the sun’s going down, this airy modern villa sleeps up to four in two ensuite bedrooms with contemporary decor and artworks. The lovely swimming pool and terrace make the most of those exceptional views. You’re only 3km from Olmeto, with its traditional local restaurants and cafés, and are within easy reach of beautiful beaches including those of the bustling seaside resort of Propriano with its great water sports offerings.

Casa di l’Olivu

Styled like a bergerie (stone shepherd's hut), this two-bedroom, one-storey villa nestled amidst ancient olive trees and vineyards shares large, with child-friendly grounds including its private garden, pool and summer kitchen. Set within the same large grounds as with two other villas, Bicu Rossu and Casa di Pruno. So, while it’s perfect for those who desire privacy (it has its own garden with a pool and summer kitchen), but it’s also ideal for those seeking to holiday with family or friends without everyone being on top of one another. Its location between Porto Vecchio and Bonifacio (each about a 15-minute drive away) is brilliant for exploring southern Corsica.

Casa di l’Olivu

In the same grounds as Villa di l’Olivu and Casa di Pruno yet also maintaining a feeling of privacy, including its own pool, this two-bedroom villa similarly mixes traditional bergerie and modern styling. As well as the restaurants of Porto Vecchio and Bonifacio, you’re well situated for the beaches of Palombaggia and the secluded coves around Figari – both about 20 minutes away by car.

Casa di Pruno

The third two-bedroom bergerie-style property in the complex of three (see above) is, like its neighbours, spacious, pretty and homely, with a private garden, swimming pool and outdoor summer kitchen. All are reached via a peaceful country road lined by olive trees, with wonderful mountain views. Santa Giulia is yet another nearby beach destination to discover from these villas, with a crescent-shaped swathe of sand and brilliant watersports.

Casarella Cesarina

A five-minute drive or 15-minute stroll down to the beaches, restaurants and boutiques of Calvi town, this two-bedroom terracotta-coloured hillside villa has gorgeous views over Calvi Bay and its backdrop of La Balagne’s mountains, including from its lovely terrace and swimming pool. It particularly stands out for its decor, which includes local antique furniture and wrought-iron lamps for an authentic Corsican feel.

Villa Kalliste

This is another fabulous contemporary villa in a hillside location – this one with superb views over Propriano Bay and the mountains from its vast French windows and its expansive south-facing terrace with pool, seating areas and barbecue equipment. Interiors have been beautifully designed as modern sociable spaces, including the open-plan living area, and there are two ensuite bathrooms. The resort of Propriano is close by, as are mile upon mile of wonderful walking trails.
