Our favourite Sardinian villas for families and couples

This rugged Italian island is among our favourite destinations in the Mediterranean, with its nearly 2,000km of coastline including lots of gorgeous sandy beaches, its wonderful hiking trails and its fascinating history – don’t miss the beehive-hive shaped stone nuraghi dating from the Bronze Age, especially Nuraghe La Prisgiona.

Other great things to see and do in Sardinia include tastings at local wineries,  touring the artists’ village and market of San Pantaleo, and meeting local weavers. Don’t miss the Costa Smeralda or ‘Emerald Coast’ on the north-east coast, with its picture-perfect bays and upscale resorts filled with super-yachts. There are also wonderful cruises from here to the rocky archipelago of La Maddalena.

Our favourite Sardinian villas for families and couples

Villa Romasinu

Large verandas (both at the front and the rear), a rooftop sun-deck with a built-in sofa and 360° sea views, plus barbecue equipment, make this two-bedroom villa irresistible. Set within the grounds of the Hotel Relax Torreruja, it’s ideal for families looking for flexibility and space combined with the benefits of a hotel. As well as a lovely pool with views, it has calming, uncluttered contemporary interiors in neutral hues.

Villa Filippa

On the Costa Smeralda and within easy reach of San Pantaleo, this is a delightful four-bedroom property in a gorgeous hilltop location with views over the Gulf of Cannigione. It feels like a hidden gem while being within a quick and easy drive of fabulous beaches, restaurants and shops. As well two doubles, two twin rooms with bunk beds and three bathrooms, this understated, elegant villa has a large pool within its peaceful garden and a spacious terrace - perfect for drinking in the views along with a bottle of delicious local wine.

Le Mendula

In the north-east of the island, this two-bedroom villa in a modern Mediterranean style is close to some of its most glamorous beaches, as well as secret, off-the-beaten-track coves. There’s a large, lush garden with a lounger-lined pool, a covered terrace, a built-in barbecue and a spacious lawn area for kids to make their own. Nearby attractions and amenities include the archaeological sites of Arzachen, San Pantaleo with its weekly market, and some great restaurants and shops.

Villa Querce

In the south of the island, near some of its loveliest but also least touristy beaches, this two-bedroom property stands out for its large sun-drenched garden, centred on a pond nestled amidst reeds and rock gardens and on a shimmering swimming pool. There’s a country feel to it all, despite it’s being right on hand for the bustling town of Pula. Ochre-coloured and spread over one level, the villa is decorated with traditional artisan furniture from around the island and some fascinating artefacts amassed during the owner’s travels.

Villa Canneddi

We love this contemporary three-bedroom villa for its unique setting within the Hotel Relax Torreruja Thalasso & SPA resort in the pretty fishing village of Isola Rossa – the facilities are free to use, including the swimming pool, the spa with its heated thalassotherapy pools, and the bars and restaurants. There are also small shops and a village promenade right nearby. The villa itself has glorious sea and sunset views, not least from its wonderful infinity-style pool.
