Superb Family Holiday In Croatia

Karen Wilson on 23 March 2016
There are a few words that sum up this stunning (there's one) country. Beautiful, fun, relaxing and cheap.

Croatia had been on my vision board for a while, several friends had been and I'd never heard anyone say a bad word about the country. August last year we landed in Split airport to a whopping 40deg heat and a humidity I'd not experienced since Miami.

Our hire car was ready and waiting and quite quickly we were on our way to the tiny resort Marusici. In usual 'Wilson' style we got a little lost, ended up on a scary dirt track very very high up in the dark!. Turns out we didn't need to go on that dirt track, our resort was in fact on the main coast road. Never a dull moment on our holidays.

Marusici is about 40 minutes down from Split airport heading towards Dubrovnik. The village is tiny and quaint with its own private little craggy bay. We had the use of kayaks which we used daily, my girls aged 8 and 11 took to them like ducks to water and were off exploring, with me closely behind. It was a great way to spend time with the girls and really quite theraputic.

We enjoyed daily snorkelling and swimming in the numerous coves and beaches we found. A few hours jet skiing, and our first go at paragliding. One of the best beaches (in the eyes of our girls) was Makarska. A busy resort with a chilled Italian feel to it, we'd absolutely stay here next time. The beach was bursting with watersports, beautiful Italians and great bars and restaurants. The girls named it 'The Ibiza Beach' due to the music, dancing, fun and frolics.

Makarska also has a gorgeous harbour and town centre that is well worth an explore. Omis, is on the same coast road and is again a wonderful little town full of windy little streets that are filled with delicious smells. Head inland a little from here and you can white water raft, zip wire and abseil. The day we visited it was tipping it down, which is not good when you're in flip flops. It just meant we had to take shelter in several shops and bars throughout the day.

Our apartment had the most fantastic views over to the island of Hvar and we'd watch the water taxi's up and down the coast all day. We enjoyed an evening at a little hidden gem of a restaurant that the owners of our apartment suggested. They sent a taxi to pick us up and we spent the a few hours in one of the most beautiful settings I've been in in a long long time. Great food and wine whilst watching the sun sink into the Adriatic sea. Great memories!

To sum our week in Croatia up 'It ranks high on the list of one of the best holidays we've ever had'

I'd have no hesitation at all in recommending this destination, it really does have something for everyone.
