Macau and Hong Kong

18 June 2014

During May 2014 I was lucky enough to visit Macau and Hong Kong courtesy of Cathay Pacific Airways and the Macau and Hong Kong tourist boards. Having not been to either in over 20 years I was very intrigued to see the changes. Our flight into Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific was very enjoyable with fantastic touch screen entertainment. The 11 and a half hour flight went very quickly with comfortable roomy seats, tasty meal options and great service. The snack galley was also an added bonus for some nibbles during the films. Arrivals into Chek Lap Kok Airport are very efficient and streamlined. I must admit I did miss the experience of landing at the old Kai Tak airport which is now a state of the art cruise terminal making Hong Kong an impressive gateway sailing point to the East. We transferred straight to Macau from Chek Lap Kok by a high speed ferry service operated by Turbo Jet, a journey time of 50 minutes; our luggage was checked through from London so the connection took no time at all. Currently a bridge is being constructed to connect Macau direct to Hong Kong spanning 29.6km; this is due for completion in 2016 which will make the transfer even quicker. Our three night stay in Macau was full of surprises; having reclaimed vast amounts of land since my last visit I didn’t recognise anything. Macau has become known as the Monte Carlo of the Orient, a gamblers delight with some old Las Vegas favourites; The Venetian, MGM and Wynn are standing tall and impressive on the Macau strip with more to follow. Don’t miss the House of the Dancing Water show at the City Of Dreams, a spectacular performance which will have your heart pounding. However Macau is not all about the casinos, being once a Portuguese colony the architecture of the old buildings has a European feel. Macau has many historic sites to visit such as the ruins of St Paul’s Cathedral, sadly destroyed by a fire during a typhoon, and is now a UNESCO world heritage site. The museum is open every day and the façade stands at the top of the steps overlooking the view of the city. Also not to be missed, A-Ma temple, St Lawrence Church, built in the 16th century and the Mandarin House which is being renovated back to its former glory. I would opt to take the walking tours suggestions which are offered by the Macau Government Tourist office, four in total each lasting about 90 minutes, this way you get to feel the atmosphere of Macau to the full. A visit not to be missed is a trip up the Macau tower. If you’re feeling adventurous (and brave) try out the bungee jumps from the top or, if you’re like me, then enjoy the views of the Pearl River Delta by day or the city lights by night. I would recommend you stop for a bite to eat, either lunch or dinner in the revolving restaurant. The selection of food from the buffet was amazing and very good value so you won’t be disappointed. In fact all of the food in Macau was delicious, it’s a bit of a foodie heaven. The mix of the Chinese and Portuguese cuisines - “Macanese” fusion had my taste buds buzzing and don’t miss out on pasties de nata (egg tarts) very nice. I was sad to leave Macau but Hong Kong was waiting so there was another smooth transfer back on the ferry. You do need to pay for your luggage which is around $40.00 per bag depending upon the weight so have some cash available and the correct amount. Upon arrival into Hong Kong we headed for more gambling this time at the Sha Tin race track which was the home to equestrian events during the 2008 Olympics. We had time to experience six races in a private box which was great fun and I even had one winner. We were looked after very well, buffet lunch and complimentary drinks were included within the package. Horse racing takes place twice a week, if you have time I would recommend an afternoon or evening out. Hong Kong was bustling and busy after the rather relaxed feel of Macau, we adjusted very quickly though and the MTR links makes life very easy to get around and explore. The system is spotlessly clean and very safe to use. The day passes are good value and you can travel between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, however at least one way you must travel on the iconic Star Ferry which has been in operation since 1888. Photo opportunities are great and it’s nice to sit back and admire the view. Another view point is the Peak which is located on Hong Kong Island. Ride the peak tram, one of the world’s oldest funicular railways, to the top and admire the stunning panoramic view of Hong Kong. One tip is to go early as the entry queues can build quite quickly. By night the city comes alive with bright lights and every night at 8pm along the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront between the Avenue of the Stars and Hong Kong Cultural Centre watch the free Symphony of Lights display which is set to music and see the skyline change shape with dancing lights and rainbow colours. One more last vista point would be the sky 100 Hong Kong Observation tower. Ride up in the speed lift; 100 floors in 60 seconds. The panoramic view is superb. The night markets also come alive at night so get ready to barter for some bargains. If you feel like escaping the hustle and bustle then book the Tai O Eco Tour which is one of the tours offered by the Hong Kong tourist board. It runs on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Wonder around Tai O fishing village located on Lantau Island and experience the local culture of the Venice of the East. In the afternoon you can head to see the Po Lin Monastery and the Tian Tan Buddha. Climb the 268 steps to get a closer view to see this remarkable statue which took 12 years to complete, very impressive. The ride back to our coach was by a 25 minute cable car ride, the views are spectacular and for all aircraft fans you get a bird’s eye view of Chek Lap Kok airport. Lantau Island is also home to Hong Kong Disneyland. If you can extend your stay, two Disney themed hotels are located on site. My whirlwind trip to Macau and Hong Kong was fantastic fun. I have had my eyes opened to both Macau and Hong Kong. Not just a stopover point, both worthy of more of anyone’s time to explore at leisure.

Moroccan Magic

23 October 2012

I recently spent five days in Morocco. The country has a lot to offer: an amazing mix of culture, mountains and beaches as well as the smells and the colours of all the spices. The Riad Aladdin in Marrakech was our home for the first couple of nights. It is in a great location and is a very quaint hotel. We enjoyed a tasty tagine on the roof top terrace and watched the storks nestling in their huge nests whilst the sun set. Marrakech is a fascinating city; busy and bustling. Make sure you visit the El Bahia Palace - imagine yourself being whisked back to the 19th century as you hear the stories about the noblemen of Morocco. In the evening, head for the Souks; an Aladdin’s cave of goodies to be discovered. From the Souks wonder around the nearby famous square, Djemaa El Fna, and watch in amazement as the street performers, snake charmers and dancers perform. I would strongly recommend a few nights up in the Atlas Mountains, only 90 minutes from Marrakech and great to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Home was the village of Tamatert and a chance to experience the Berber life. Douar Samra is a wonderful guest house. The staff looked after us and we were made to feel very welcome. Sipping mint tea on the roof tops while admiring the view was heaven. We were escorted down into the village by the local donkeys that helped carry our luggage (please don’t be alarmed they were very well looked after). If you’re feeling energetic you can climb mount Toubkal. Unfortunately we only had time for the foothills, but it was still absolutely stunning. On the move again and this time we went to the coastal resort of Essaouira, with fantastic sea food available from this small fishing village. We stayed at the Riad al Medina in a great location within the city walls so you can wander around the souks and enjoy the sea views from the fort. Essaouira has a very relaxed atmosphere; locals are very friendly and the whole place has a certain charm. During our visit, we also spent time at Palais Sebban, a small boutique Riad in Marrakech with a French feel. It is a fantastic place to stay; very relaxed, quiet and calm. We were also fortunate to visit the Riad Elfenn (also in Marrakech) and the Kasbah Tamadot close to the Atlas Mountains, both of which are owned by Sir Richard Branson. Very individual in style and unique, Kasbah Tamadot was being set up for an exclusive wedding. It was a beautiful setting for one very lucky bride and groom! If you have time, I would also recommend a trip to a Moroccan Hammam which is a very relaxing experience. Also, don’t leave Morocco without some Argan Oil, fantastic for your skin and makes your hair lovely and shiny! Morocco is a stunning place to visit with some lovely, and very unique, hotels. There are also a vast option of tours to suit every traveller.

I have been using Lisa Harris for the last five years to book trips, flights and hotels. Lisa has been brilliant; always professional, accessible and nothing is too much trouble! I do not hesitate to recommend her!

Lisa takes all the stress out of booking a holiday. All my minute requests are seamlessly attended to including flight seats. She is always professional and ready to help at any time, even whilst actually on holiday abroad. A couple of years ago she managed to help myself and my daughter when a pre-booked day excursion went wrong in Cyprus. She proceeded to arrange a taxi from our hotel which then caught up the coach that had failed to pick us up. It was a bit like a James Bond Movie! We were then able to continue on with our wonderful day excursion which I was so looking forward to. This was all sorted out from the UK by Lisa. Amazing. I know that Lisa will always manage to get us the best holiday options. She is FAB.

I am so pleased my friends recommended Lisa to me. I have never met anyone who is more helpful, friendly and professional all rolled into one. Nothing seems to be too much bother for Lisa. From personal experience, Lisa has booked us several cycling holidays and all at a very good price. Surprisingly, it was cheaper to book through Lisa than to book direct with the tour company. We often want to tag on an extra couple of days and Lisa goes the extra mile finding us hotels and booking taxis too. Lisa came into her own when we were in India as the UK went into lockdown in March 2020. It was Lisa who persuaded us to cut our holiday short and get home. Whilst the rest of the group on our tour were panicking about getting home, Lisa had rebooked our flights and kept checking that we were ok. Thank goodness she persuaded us to come home early, as we were on the last flight out of Delhi before India went into a strict lockdown. Early in 2020, before anyone had heard of Covid, I booked flights to Seoul through a cheaper flight bucket shop. What a mistake that turned out to be as a year later I am still out of pocket. Lesson learnt. Even though I didn’t book through Lisa, she has been amazing in advising me what I should do to try to get my money back. What a hero! I whole heartedly recommend Lisa.

There is only one word for Lisa -AWESOME! She has sorted out numerous trips for us and nothing is ever too much trouble (....we change our minds a lot!!). From pre trip planning through to checking in and making sure everything is ok while you are away, her service is faultless. My husband and I are pretty well travelled and in the past, have mainly booked trips ourselves but the level of service you get when you book through Lisa just takes so many of the little headaches away that we now book pretty much all our overseas trips through her and will continue to do so for many more years to come. Thanks for everything you do Lisa - you are a marvel!!

Lisa has organised our holidays for a number of years now. She is amazing and very very professional. Her attention to detail is second to none and no issue or task is too small for her. One thing that makes her stand out is the service she provides throughout the whole experience. She will sort out anything that may arise while you are away and has even been on hand to rebook hotels and transfers when flights were cancelled. I would have no hesitation at all in recommending her - she is friendly, professional and knowledgable - what more do you want from a travel advisor.

Where do I start? Nothing is ever too much trouble for Lisa. We wanted to travel independently to Canada, and had some 'must do things on our list'. Other travel agents said it couldn't be done, but Lisa set up a bespoke itinerary that captured every place and activity we asked for within the timescales we needed. She also checked each activity the day before, re-confirmed our bookings and let us know the meeting times / details each day. On another occasion we needed to stay in a specific hotel in Thailand for family reasons. It appeared to be fully booked, but Lisa called them direct and secured us the last available room. I would seriously not even consider using a different travel agent. Lisa always ensures a completely stress free experience whether it is business travel or for pleasure.

Lisa is endlessly patient with my evolving plans. I know I am in safe hands when my trips are booked through her.

Lisa is always helpful, responsive, polite and is able to organise the travel I need. I am so lucky to have her. Nothing is too much trouble for her no matter how small the request. Or how large.

Lisa organised a two month holiday to Australia, New Zealand and the Far East for me and my wife at the end of 2013. This was the second trip Lisa had sorted for us (the previous one being to Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands in 2012). She has produced two seamless trips, both of which required a lot of co-ordination and organisation with so many parts to them. She has boundless energy and our requests to change certain aspects were always met with "that won't be a problem". I cannot recommend Lisa highly enough and know that anyone using her services will be extremely pleased with her planning.

I cannot recommend Lisa highly enough! She is the ultimate professional from the first telephone conversation right up until her welcome home call. Everything about booking our weeks holiday in Tenerife was perfect - she was so organised and quick with her information and nothing was too much trouble. All the information she gave us was totally accurate and her attention to detail cannot be matched. During out weeks stay, Lisa texted to check everything was perfect and to confirm our transfer times - she is fantastic. I would highly recommend Lisa to everyone - and have already! I am sure her business will grow fast and she will win awards in the tourist world for her level of commitment to the client.

I can not recommend Lisa highly enough. She has been so fantastic in sorting out my trip to Chicago; best deal on flights and coming up with suggestions and ideas for fab places to stay in the city not only meeting but exceeding my expectations for the trip. Above all Lisa is highly reliable, efficient, hardworking as well as extremely personable. It has been a pleasure working with her and I will defeinitely be using her when planning my next big trip.

We've just returned from a fabulous honeymoon exploring the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia. At first, my future wife and I thought it might be difficult to relinquish control of our honeymoon planning. However, after our first conversation with Lisa, she set us at complete ease with her friendly and efficient consultation. We were hoping for a bespoke feel to our trip - this was exactly what was provided. Lisa took on board our ideas and preferences and then went away and did all the leg work to provide us with a structure to work from including shortlists for hotels, transfers, car hire, ferry crossings and flights. This meant we could tailor the finer details to our liking and Lisa had already sifted the gems from the mountain of available information. Throughout the process, Lisa was thoroughly professional and punctual which made it an absolute pleasure. She also drew on her own experiences to provide some great suggestions. Before we left she gave us all the documentation we required in a handy pack - couldn't have made it easier! We will definitely be recommending her to friends and we will use her again in future.

Just back from a holiday to Sydney made easy by Lisa's friendly, helpful and efficient service. Great help in finding the right deal and sorting out visas and limo pick ups and answering all our questions quickly. We will be in touch for any future trip.

I've yet to go on my trip to Australia, but I'm praising Lisa to the skies for simply organising it for me. She's taken all the stress out of the planning, endlessly patient, very understanding, and nothing was too much trouble. This is a big trip for me on my own, as I'm not a frequent traveller and not in the first flush of youth either!! Can't wait to get on that plane. Thank you Lisa for all your help.

Lisa has the ability to come up with the goods, with a very pleasant manner, and a willingness to pursue our ideas until achieved. We will certainly be contacting her to arrange our next holiday.

At last, I have unpacked my case, cut the lawn and now ready to say 'thank you very much'! On behalf of us all, thanks for making such a professional job of our holiday arrangements to Italy and visits to Rome, Florence and Venice. A lovely holiday was had by all. Well done and thanks very, very much.

Sent by Samantha Baber

It's impossible to succinctly explain how brilliant Lisa is in just 400 words! She has booked both a cruise and 2 weeks travelling around Cuba for me and as a (slightly fussy) seasoned traveller I can honestly say that her level of service and attention to detail is second to none. I've had no hesitation in recommending her to just about everyone I know!

Sent by Charlotte Haines

Lisa is superb at what she does! She sourced about 5 different flight options for me to South America (including internal flights) and nothing was too much trouble - despite me changing my mind so many times! Lisa goes beyond the call of duty because she loves what she does. She found me places to stay and provided me with destination advice too. A fantastic service, which is more than just a service.

Sent by Paul Gration

The fact that we had a great holiday is testament alone to Lisa. We initially threw her a pretty vague criteria with some fairly specific “must haves”. Lisa came up with some great options and despite a french rail strike and a UK tube strike, found us a fantastic destination. Lisa was always on hand to help and we would not hesitate to recommend her services and will be using her again!

Sent by Matthew Morley-Brown

Lisa has been a total lifesaver for all my travel arrangements. She's unbelievably efficient, friendly, professional, helpful and goes well beyond the call of duty on every job I've given her. She single-handedly saved the weekend Stag Do I was trying to organise and ended up co-ordinating a completely new weekend, late on a Friday night, when our flights to Valencia were cancelled. Wow!

Sent by Sarah Stretton

We were so impressed with Lisa's warm, friendly and efficient character. We've recommended her to all of our friends. We've booked several trips with Lisa and every time she's found us the very best deal. She goes above and beyond to help. It's so refreshing to deal with somebody who is dedicated to your booking and deals with everything personally. Thank you Lisa!
