Jamaica: Sun, Soul & Unforgettable Moments

A Personal Guide From Your Travel Counsellor

Lucie Town on 10 Nov 2022

Some destinations you visit once. Jamaica is a place you return to again and again. I have been travelling to Jamaica since I was 8 years old and have now visited more than five times. Every trip feels like coming home to warm smiles, reggae rhythms and the kind of natural beauty that stays with you long after you have left. If your heart is calling for white-sand beaches, turquoise waters and a rich cultural story, Jamaica is the island that delivers it all, wrapped in that unmistakable laid‑back Jamaican charm. Below, I will take you through some of my favourite corners of the island, along with experiences I genuinely love and recommend to my own clients!

Negril: Barefoot Luxury On Seven Miles Of Sand
Negril is Jamaica in “slow motion”: long, golden days, easy beach bars and the softest of sunsets. This is the side of the island for clients who want time to stretch out and breathe.

Along the famous Seven Mile Beach you will find:

Cafés and beach bars dotted along the shoreline, ideal for lazy lunches with your feet in the sand. Live music and a laid‑back vibe, from chilled reggae playing in the background to more upbeat spots as the sun goes down. For something truly special, I love to talk to clients about visiting the Pelican Bar, a rustic wooden bar perched out at sea on a sandbank. You reach it by boat, then sit with an ice-cold drink, surrounded by nothing but water, sky and the occasional pelican. It is the sort of experience that feels delightfully exclusive, yet authentically Jamaican.

Negril is perfect for couples and friends who want to slow the pace, enjoy stunning beaches and still have plenty of relaxed nightlife close at hand.

Ocho Rios: Adventure, Nature & Iconic Jamaican Experiences
Ocho Rios is a fantastic choice if you want a blend of beach time, shopping, family‑friendly fun and some of the island’s most famous attractions right on your doorstep.

Here you will find:
Shopping malls and local boutiques, great for picking up handcrafted souvenirs, Jamaican coffee and local artwork. Beautiful beaches, ideal for a morning swim before heading out on excursions.

Three of my absolute “musts” in this area are:

Dunn’s River Falls
If there is one experience I always encourage my clients to include, it is Dunn’s River Falls. You can climb the terraced limestone falls either all the way from the beach or from halfway up, depending on how confident you feel. Along the way, you can take a refreshing dip in the natural rock pools, which feel wonderfully therapeutic after a warm Caribbean day. Guides are on hand to help, so it is suitable for most ages and abilities, but still feels like a real adventure. It is energetic, fun and unforgettable: an iconic Jamaican memory in the making.

Mystic Mountain
For clients who like a touch of adrenaline with their sunshine, Mystic Mountain is a fantastic day out. Glide above the rainforest on a ski‑lift style chair with sweeping views across the canopy and coastline. Feel your heart race on zip‑wires that whoosh through the lush greenery. Try the famous bobsled ride, inspired by Jamaica’s legendary bobsleigh team, for something uniquely Jamaican and brilliantly fun.

Luminous Lagoon
After dark, another magical experience awaits: the Luminous Lagoon, where the water glows around you thanks to rare bioluminescent microorganisms!
You can:
Take a guided boat trip out into the lagoon.
Swim in the glowing water, watching every movement light up in an ethereal blue.

It is truly one of those once‑in‑a‑lifetime experiences that feels almost otherworldly!

Montego Bay: Lively, Colourful & Full Of Flavour
Montego Bay, or “MoBay” as it is often called, offers a vibrant mix of beaches, shopping and nightlife. It is a brilliant base for clients who enjoy a little more buzz and variety.

Highlights include:
Modern shopping malls, ideal for browsing duty‑free shops and international brands, alongside local crafts.
Lively dining and nightlife, with bars, restaurants and clubs serving up everything from fresh seafood to classic Jamaican jerk.
Spots like Margaritaville combine food, music and a joyful party atmosphere, perfect for those evenings when you want to dance under the Caribbean stars.

Montego Bay is also a convenient gateway for exploring other parts of the island on day trips and excursions, making it a great choice for first‑time visitors who want flexibility and options.

Kingston & The Blue Mountains: Culture, History & Cool Mountain Air
For clients who want to go deeper into Jamaica’s story, Kingston and the Blue Mountains offer a fascinating contrast to the coastal resorts.

Through Fern Valley To The Capital.
The journey itself is part of the experience. Driving through Fern Valley in the Blue Mountains, you move from warm coastal air to cooler, misty slopes filled with lush greenery and incredible viewpoints. A picnic in the mountains is a wonderful touch I love to include, where you can enjoy the crisp air and panoramic vistas.
Once you reach Kingston, you are in the heart of Jamaican culture.

Bob Marley & Nine Mile.
A visit to Bob Marley’s former home and a tour to Nine Mile provide a powerful insight into the life and legacy of Jamaica’s most famous son. You can follow in his footsteps, learn about his music and beliefs, and even see and touch the bullet holes left from the attempted assassination at his home. For music lovers in particular, this experience is incredibly moving.

Devon House & The Gardens
Kingston also offers:
Devon House, a beautiful heritage mansion with charming architecture, local shops and some of the island’s best-loved ice cream. Elegant public gardens, perfect for a gentle stroll away from the bustle, where you can pause and soak up the atmosphere. This side of Jamaica suits clients who are curious, culturally inclined and keen to see beyond the beaches.

Heritage, Plantation History & Great Houses
Jamaica’s past is complex, and its historic Great Houses and estates offer a window into that story, blending stately architecture with moving history.

Some particularly memorable visits include:

Cinnamon Hill Great House, once home to country music legend Johnny Cash. Standing in the same rooms he lived in adds a personal dimension to the island’s history and its international connections.
Rose Hall Great House, an imposing plantation house with famous legends and ghost stories attached. Evening tours can be particularly atmospheric.
These tours can be tailored to your interests, whether you want to focus more on architecture and interiors, or on understanding the social and historical context of Jamaica’s plantation past.

On The Water: Catamarans, Sunsets & Port Royal
No Jamaican itinerary feels complete without at least one day out on the water.

I often recommend:

Catamaran day cruises, where you can snorkel over vibrant reefs, sunbathe on deck and enjoy drinks and music as you sail along the coastline.
Sunset cruises, which are wonderfully romantic, especially for honeymoons and special anniversaries, as the sky turns shades of pink, gold and deep orange.
For something a little different, a Port Royal Heritage Tour brings to life the story of what was once known as the “wickedest city on earth”, with tales of pirates, earthquakes and sunken streets. It is a fascinating glimpse into Jamaica’s maritime history and is ideal for clients who enjoy a strong storytelling element to their travels.

Taste Of Jamaica: Appleton Estate & Local Rum
Jamaican rum is known around the world, and a visit to the Appleton Estate is a wonderful way to connect with the island’s flavours.

On a tour here you can:

Discover how rum is produced, from cane to bottle.
Walk through the estate and learn about its heritage.
Enjoy tastings that reveal the rich, complex character of Appleton’s blends.

It is a lovely experience for couples, groups of friends and anyone who appreciates a good drink with a story behind it.
