Sri Lanka: A Journey to Remember!
I totally and utterly fell in love with Sri Lanka during my visit last October. My 10-night adventure, expertly organised by my trusted supplier Hummingbird Travel, completely surpassed all expectations.
We kicked things off in Colombo before heading to the beautiful Ulagalla Resort, with a lunch stop at the breathtaking Sigiriya Water Gardens. Day two was packed with a scenic cycling tour and a heartfelt riverside lunch, complete with a live performance and emotional local story that moved us all. The evening ended with a traditional Sri Lankan feast—an unforgettable day.
The next morning, we journeyed to the tranquil Nachchaduwa Lake, enjoying a peaceful breakfast surrounded by birdlife and lush paddy fields. On our way to Kandy, we stopped at the awe-inspiring Dambulla Cave Temple—400 steps later, the views were more than worth it. That evening, we arrived at Santani Wellness Resort, where we sipped cocktails by the pool and indulged in a seven-course dinner. A couple of days off-grid, tech-free, and truly restorative.
Then came Gal Oya National Park—remote, untouched, and teeming with wildlife. Staying in a charming eco-lodge, we had no Wi-Fi or AC, just fans and open-air bathrooms for stargazing under the night sky. We cooked outdoors with Chef Premarathna and shared stories with the village chief of the Veddha community—a humbling, unforgettable experience.
After an early jungle drive and picnic breakfast, we travelled to Yala National Park, stopping along the way for scenic views and a hilarious encounter with a cheeky monkey who stole a local’s ice cream! Our stay at Uga Chena Huts was magical—huge private rooms with plunge pools, and wildlife quite literally on our doorstep. Morning and evening safaris brought unforgettable sightings of elephants and three different leopards, one of which came breathtakingly close.
As our journey came to a close, we visited the luxurious Wild Coast Tented Lodge and then The Six, a set of exquisite beach villas. I stayed in Villa Bari—think Italian coast meets Sri Lankan paradise. A beach barbecue under the stars and a crackling bonfire made our last night on the coast something truly special.
We ended the trip in historic Galle, exploring its UNESCO World Heritage Fort and staying at the stunning Galle Fort Hotel. Arrack tasting and a final celebratory dinner wrapped up our adventure in style.
In over 35 years in the travel industry, I’ve been fortunate to visit many amazing destinations—but Sri Lanka truly stole my heart. This country offers something for everyone—thrilling safaris, serene beaches, cultural richness, unforgettable food, and warm hospitality. One standout moment? Spending time with a hermit monk—quiet, reflective, and deeply moving. Oh, and having dinner in the middle of a rice field? Magical!

I really like working with Michelle, she comes up with options for holidays which fit with our budget, big or small, and suggests places we may not ordinarily consider. She takes all the hassle out of everything. When we were in New York on the eve of the complete Covid lockdown, she managed to organize flights home whilst we were asleep, so in the morning we just had to get ourselves to the airport. you don't get that when booking yourself!
