A Costa Rican wildlife expedition

If you have ever watched a nature documentary and wished you could step through the screen, this itinerary is the closest you will get. This is not a standard beach holiday with a bit of jungle tagged on the end; it is a dedicated wildlife expedition designed for people who want to see the natural world in its most active, noisy, and colourful state. This trip takes you from the Caribbean coast to the Pacific, through cloud forests and along winding river canals, ensuring you see the full spectrum of what this remarkable country has to offer.
  • The adventure begins on the Caribbean side in Tortuguero National Park. There are no roads here, only waterways, which immediately changes the pace of your travel. You navigate by boat, drifting quietly through narrow channels where the forest grows right down to the water's edge. This is prime territory for spotting caimans, river otters, and monkeys swinging through the canopy above.

  • Moving inland, the landscape shifts dramatically as you approach La Fortuna and the imposing Arenal Volcano. While the volcano itself is a majestic backdrop, the real draw here is the surrounding ecosystem. You will explore the Eco-Termales hot springs—not a man-made pool, but natural thermal waters heated by the volcano's energy. The area is also fantastic for spotting sloths. These slow-moving creatures are surprisingly difficult to spot without a trained eye, but your expert guides know exactly where to look.

  • There is a distinct change in atmosphere as you ascend into the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. The air is cooler, and the trees are draped in mosses, bromeliads, and orchids. This unique habitat is home to the Resplendent Quetzal, a bird so striking it was considered divine by ancient civilisations. Seeing one in the wild requires patience and luck, but the search itself takes you through some of the most atmospheric forest trails on the planet. Walking across the hanging bridges here gives you a bird's-eye view of the canopy, a perspective usually reserved for the creatures that live there.

  • The trip concludes on the Pacific coast at Manuel Antonio. This is where the rainforest meets the ocean. You can watch white-faced capuchin monkeys playing in the trees that line the beach while you relax on the sand. It is a rare place where you can swim in warm, clear waters and see iguanas sunning themselves on the rocks nearby.
