A curated route through Japan’s cities

13 nights from £6,099 per person based on 2 sharing

This small-group itinerary is designed to show the many highlights of Japan at a comfortable, well-judged pace, moving from the energy of the capital to historic cities and quieter natural settings. Over 13 nights, you travel through Tokyo, Matsumoto, Kanazawa, Kyoto, and Hakone, combining well-known landmarks with everyday moments that reveal how each place really feels.
  • The journey begins in Tokyo, where the scale and tempo of the city quickly become apparent. Time is spent in areas like Asakusa, home to the Sensō-ji Temple and traditional shopping streets lined with small food stalls and craft shops. There’s space to explore local neighbourhoods too, whether that’s picking up snacks from a depachika food hall or riding the subway between districts that feel completely different from one another.

  • From Tokyo, the itinerary slows as it moves into the Japanese mountains and on to the Sea of Japan coast. Matsumoto is smaller and more contained, with its striking black castle as a focal point and walkable streets that encourage lingering rather than sightseeing at speed. Kanazawa follows, offering a deeper sense of traditional city life through areas like the Nagamachi samurai district and the lanes around Higashi Chaya. Ōmichō Market is a highlight here, where lunch is often a simple seafood bowl or grilled skewers, eaten alongside locals doing their daily errands.

  • In Kyoto, you’ll visit major landmarks such as Kinkaku-ji and Fushimi Inari before exploring Gion in the early evening, when the streets are empty and lanterns are lit. The trip then finishes in Hakone, where views across Lake Ashi and time near the hot springs offer a gentle wind-down after the busier cities.

  • During the tour, accommodation is a mix of comfortable 3- and 3.5-star hotels chosen for their locations and overall feel rather than luxury branding. Rooms are well laid out, with good-quality beds and space to unwind at the end of the day. Many properties include useful extras, such as public baths, lounges, or on-site dining, which makes them feel like part of the experience rather than just a place to sleep.
