Your first stop after leaving Miami is St. Croix. The island’s long stretches of coastline make it easy to get away from the crowds, especially if you head slightly north of Frederiksted toward quieter beaches like Sprat Hall or the more open areas past Butler Bay. Snorkelling is surprisingly good close to shore, and the reefs here tend to be calm enough for beginners. Alternatively, walking paths around the old sugar mill sites give you a mix of sea views and island history without needing a guide.

Next is San Juan, Puerto Rico, and here the highlight is Old San Juan’s compact historic quarter. Walk along the blue cobblestones past Castillo San Felipe del Morro and pick a small restaurant on Calle Fortaleza or Calle San Sebastián for classic dishes like mofongo, frituras, and coffee. It’s a short, walkable stop where you can fit a fortress visit, a coffee shop, and a bakery run into a morning or afternoon without needing much transport.

One of your final stops is Puerto Plata, a place where everyday life plays out openly in the streets. You’ll hear music from barbershops, see locals playing dominoes on sidewalks, and families gathering around food stalls on the Malecón. If you want something simple but memorable, small spots near Calle Jose del Carmen Ariza serve hearty Dominican dishes without any fuss.
