A luxurious London to Venice rail journey

11 nights from £2,299 per person based on 2 sharing

This bespoke itinerary seamlessly connects the beauty of the Swiss Alps with the historical weight of the Veneto. Take to the high-altitude tracks of the Bernina Pass, cutting through snow-capped Alpine peaks before descending into the warm, terracotta-lined waterways of Italy. This carefully designed route that turns the journey into an experience just as important as the destination.
  • Begin your journey with a direct Eurostar from London to Paris, then continue by train to Zurich. After checking into your hotel, stroll along the scenic Lake Promenade or wander the cobbled streets of the old town between Central and Bellevue. Take time to browse the world-class collections at Kunsthaus or indulge in a leisurely shopping experience on Bahnhofstrasse - often likened to the Champs-Élysées of Switzerland.

  • Next, embark on one of the world’s most celebrated rail journeys: the Bernina Express. You’ll travel from Zurich to Chur, then board the panoramic train as it winds through UNESCO-listed mountain scenery, past snowy peaks, elegant stone viaducts, and shimmering alpine lakes. After arriving in Tirano, transfer to the Trenord train for a picturesque ride along Lake Como towards Milan, where you’ll spend the night.

  • Venice simply demands exploration and is best experienced with a gondola ride, a tradition stretching back more than a thousand years. Lose yourself in the lively surroundings of St. Mark’s Square, gazing up at the intricate mosaics of the Basilica, or take a guided tour through the historic rooms and passageways of the Doge’s Palace for a deeper appreciation of Venice’s storied past. There’s ample time for leisurely lunches by the water, as well as visits to fascinating museums, art galleries, and ornate churches.

  • Dining on this route shifts dramatically with the altitude. In the Swiss valleys, you can sample rich, hearty mountain fare, before crossing the border to try pizzoccheri - a traditional buckwheat pasta native to the Valtellina region. Once in Venice, explore the bacari of the Cannaregio neighbourhood. Here, you can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with locals at spots like Cantina Do Mori, sampling small plates of cicchetti featuring salted cod and marinated artichokes, perfectly paired with a crisp glass of regional Prosecco.
