Beyond the town, you can join classic Lapland experiences, such as husky sledging. These activities are run by locals who’ve been working with the animals for generations, giving you a first-hand experience of everyday life in Finnish Lapland.

• In Oulu, time centres around Kauppatori market square, where traders sell fish, baked goods, and seasonal produce. The wooden market hall is a good stop for trying salmon soup or grabbing a coffee and a pastry. A walk along the frozen Oulujoki river gives a sense of how the city adapts to its climate, with locals still out and about in the cold.

• Luleå sits on the edge of Swedish Lapland and is a base for outdoor activities in winter. Options range from ice fishing on frozen lakes to snowshoe walks in the surrounding forests. With clear skies and long nights, it’s also one of the best stops for viewing the northern lights.

• Life on the ship balances comfort with exploration. Facilities include multiple dining venues, a spa, an indoor pool, and panoramic lounges.
