A wildlife adventure to Costa Rica

14 nights from £4,949 per person based on 2 sharing

Costa Rica holds a reputation as a global leader in conservation, protecting a density of biodiversity that is difficult to find anywhere else on Earth. To the untrained eye, the primary rainforest can appear impenetrable. To really understand this ecosystem, you need an expert to decode it for you. This 15-day itinerary offers exactly that, placing you under the guidance of Johnny Villalobos, an award-winning tour leader known for his exceptional ability to spot wildlife that others often miss.
  • The quality of a wildlife tour often rests on the shoulders of the guide. Johnny Villalobos is an Exodus Tour Leader of the Year, recognised for his encyclopaedic knowledge of Costa Rican flora and fauna. With him, a walk through the forest becomes a masterclass. He understands the behaviours of the quetzal and the three-toed sloth, ensuring you are in the right place at the right time to observe them safely and respectfully.

  • Accessible only by boat or light aircraft, Tortuguero is a network of freshwater canals and dense vegetation on the Caribbean coast. You’ll navigate these waterways by boat, which allows for silent observation. This is one of the best locations to spot caimans, river otters, and howler monkeys as they move through the canopy overhead.

  • Rising into the highlands, the air cools and the vegetation changes. Monteverde is a high-altitude forest where the moisture hangs in the air, sustaining a complex ecosystem of orchids, bromeliads, and mosses. It’s a distinct environment from the coastal rainforests and offers a different set of species, including the elusive bellbird. The walking trails here are well-maintained, allowing for focused observation of the birdlife that thrives in this unique climate.

  • The conical shape of Arenal Volcano dominates the landscape of the northern lowlands. While the volcano itself is impressive, the surrounding area is rich in thermal springs and hiking trails. This area will be your base to explore the transitional forests, providing opportunities to see toucans and perhaps even the coati, a relative of the raccoon that is common in these parts.
