When you dock in Kusadasi, you are on the doorstep of Ephesus, one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean. Walking down the marble-paved Curetes Street towards the Library of Celsus offers a sense of scale you simply cannot get from a guidebook. It is an expansive site, so we always recommend comfortable shoes and getting there early to appreciate the architecture before the midday sun hits.

The run into the Adriatic is spectacular, particularly the approach to Kotor. Navigating the bay - which looks and feels like a fjord - is a highlight of the sailing. In Dubrovnik, rather than sticking to the main thoroughfare of the Stradun, try exploring the side streets or walking the city walls. The perspective over the terracotta rooftops and out to the sheer drop of the sea cliffs creates a memorable atmosphere that feels distinct from the rest of the Mediterranean.

The final leg brings you to Naples, the spiritual home of pizza. You will find the authentic version is deceptively simple: San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella di bufala, fresh basil, and olive oil. If you want to escape the city energy, this port is also your jumping-off point for Capri or Pompeii. Earlier in the voyage, your stop in Salerno offers excellent access to the Amalfi Coast, where the local lemons end up in everything from sorbets to risottos.
