The tour kicks off in Tokyo, with time spent in areas such as Asakusa offering a contrast to the surrounding high-rise districts, with Sensō-ji Temple, local shopping streets, and long-standing food stalls giving a sense of how daily life has carried on for generations. A private tour helps cut through the crowds and adds context, while free time allows for evenings spent exploring neighbourhood restaurants, casual izakayas, or simply walking through districts lit up by neon signage.

From the capital, the itinerary shifts to the Japanese Alps, where Takayama introduces a slower pace. The old town’s wooden merchant houses, morning markets, and small sake breweries feel far removed from city life. This is a place known for its craftsmanship and regional food, from Hida beef to simple mountain dishes. The change in pace is intentional, giving space to appreciate the quieter side of Japan before continuing west.

Kanazawa is next, a city known for its well-preserved districts and strong ties to traditional arts. Time is spent around Kenrokuen Garden, one of Japan’s most celebrated landscape gardens, as well as the historic Nagamachi Samurai District. Wandering through the Higashi Chaya District offers a quieter rhythm, with teahouses, gold-leaf workshops, and small cafés giving a sense of daily life that feels distinctly local.

Hiroshima and Kyoto form the final stages of the journey. In Hiroshima, guided visits provide insight into the city’s past, balanced with time spent on Miyajima Island, known for Itsukushima Shrine and its iconic torii gate. Kyoto then brings the trip to a close with private tours covering key sites such as Fushimi Inari and a day trip to Nara, where temples and roaming deer create a very different atmosphere to the cities already visited.
