Cartagena's Roman Theatre - buried beneath the city for centuries and only excavated in the late 1980s - is one of the most striking ancient sites in Spain, and reason enough to linger. Valencia the following day is the birthplace of paella; the real version, made with rabbit, chicken, and wood fire, is a world away from what most of us know. The voyage ends with a full day in Barcelona where Gaudí's Sagrada Família, the Gothic Quarter, and the Boqueria market are all within easy reach of the port.

Most itineraries give you a single afternoon in Palma de Mallorca. This voyage gives you an overnight, which changes things considerably. There's time for a proper evening in the city - the Cathedral lit up after dark, dinner in the old Arab quarter, and a walk along the waterfront without watching the clock.
