As you continue south into Provence, stops in Arles and Avignon bring a different feel again. In Arles, the remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheatre dominates the centre, a reminder of the town’s ancient past. Avignon, meanwhile, is defined by the vast Palais des Papes, a striking Gothic palace that reflects the city’s time as the seat of the papacy.
