This seven-night walking holiday follows a clear, rewarding route across Puglia’s Gargano Peninsula. Starting in Vieste and finishing in Mattinata, you’ll walk coastal paths above the Adriatic, spend time in the shade of Foresta Umbra, and explore the historic streets of Monte Sant'Angelo. It’s a varied week that combines sea views, countryside, and authentic southern Italian towns.

  • Your first base, Vieste, sets the tone with its mix of beach and old town character. Walking routes trace the coastline, passing limestone formations, such as Pizzomunno and quiet stretches of sand, before looping back to the whitewashed centre. The historic quarter is compact and easy to explore, with simple seafood restaurants and relaxed piazzas that come into their own in the evening.

  • Heading inland, the scenery changes as you reach Foresta Umbra, part of the Gargano National Park. Here, the focus is on peaceful woodland walking along well-marked tracks beneath tall beech trees. The terrain is gentler, the air is cooler, and the atmosphere is quieter than on the coast. It’s a refreshing contrast and a reminder of how diverse this corner of Puglia really is.

  • The route then climbs to Monte Sant’Angelo, a hilltop town known for the Sanctuary of San Michele, a UNESCO-listed pilgrimage site built around a cave shrine. The streets are narrow and traditional, with local bakeries and small cafés serving regional specialities. From the town’s viewpoints, you can look back towards the Adriatic and appreciate how far you’ve travelled on foot.
