Walk with penguins in Antarctica

11 nights from £10,039 per person based on 2 sharing

Step aboard AE Expeditions’ purpose-built Sylvia Earle ship for an unforgettable 11-night adventure to the White Continent. Starting in Punta Arenas in southern Chile, you’ll take a scenic charter flight to King George Island before setting sail through the icy waters of the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands. Each day brings a new landing or Zodiac excursion, from penguin-filled beaches to vast glaciers, before sailing north to finish your journey in Ushuaia, Argentina, the world’s southernmost city.
  • Your adventure really kicks off on King George Island, the largest of the South Shetlands. It’s a place where the landscape feels raw and untamed, dotted with a handful of international research stations. You’ll wander along pebbled beaches where gentoo and Adélie penguins shuffle about, seals stretch out on the ice, and you get your first real taste of what life is like at the edge of the world.

  • Sailing further into the Antarctic Peninsula, the scenery becomes even more dramatic. Towering glaciers and snow-covered peaks surround you, and narrow passages like the Lemaire Channel feel almost otherworldly with cliffs rising straight from the sea. Out on the water, humpback whales surface nearby while penguin colonies bustle along the shoreline.

  • At Deception Island, you’ll walk across black volcanic sand inside a flooded crater, with steam sometimes rising from the ground as a reminder of the forces beneath your feet. Not far away, Half Moon Island gives you sweeping views, rugged peaks, and the chance to spot seals stretched out along the shore. It’s a part of Antarctica that feels both wild and different from anywhere else on the route.

  • Throughout, you’ll be travelling on the Sylvia Earle, a modern expedition ship designed to balance adventure with comfort. Staterooms are airy and inviting, many with floor-to-ceiling windows to frame the icy panoramas and private balconies. Social spaces like the observation lounge make the most of the scenery, while evenings are relaxed with inclusive wine and beer at dinner, a welcoming bar, and the chance to connect with fellow travellers.
