Sue and I and our 2 Golden Retrievers went for a winter break in the Cotswolds. We hired the lovely Hazel Manor Wing through Sykes Holiday Cottages, one of our highly recommended suppliers.

Hazel Manor Wing, as the name suggests, is the detached and private wing of a rather grand Cotswold manor home.

As we drove down onto the property via a sweeping tree-lined drive and waved to the 2 resident donkeys in their adjacent field, we felt 'oh yes, this is the life'.

The main building is a listed Cotswold house complete with rambling roses and built in the typical Cotswold stone.

Inside, the cottage is very warm and bright and the large, vaulted living area is impressive, with a large open fire surrounded by very comfortable sofas and a low coffee table. There is an excellent kitchen and dining table with loads of space. I must say that there is an unbelievable amount of kitchen equipment - way more than we would expect!

There are 2 bedrooms and bathrooms which are very well equipped including a bath and a rainfall shower. Having 2 dogs we found the fully enclosed courtyard very useful!

The location of the property is ideal for visiting the Cotswold hot-spots; Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, Moreton-in-Marsh, Broadway, Our favourite was Bourton, but all the towns and villages are worth visiting. Further afield we drove to Bath for the day, and also Oxford, plus Chepstow, Tintern (Abbey) and the sadly flooded Ross on Wye.

Although the weather wasn't great (what do you expect in February) we benefited from a great low season price, and there were far fewer tourists than in the summer, so no traffic jams or struggling to find a table in a pub to eat, and our 2 furry friends were very impressed that everywhere was so dog friendly!

All in all, a lovely winter break!
