New York

This was my first visit back to New York in nearly 22 years so I was excited to see if it had changed. Also it was my first experience of Continental Airlines.

The check in process was smooth using the electronic check in, however there was assistance available if required. The check in staff were very polite and friendly asking quite a few security questions which made the overall time to go through check in quick and pleasant.

We did have access to the Continental business class lounge which was quiet and well stocked with refreshments, alcoholic and non plus lovely food. The staff were helpful and it was a calm place to sit or work. Boarding was quick and not far to walk from the lounge. We sat in economy but with extra legroom seats which did make a difference, Continental Airlines do charge for this service.

The meal was served promptly and efficiently and was one of the best on board meals I have had. The on board entertainment system was brilliant with plenty of films to suit all age ranges and tastes along with games and programmes. Overall the flight was one of the best I have been on.

On arrival the immigration process was tedious but necessary, luckily we got through in a timely fashion to find our luggage already off loaded and waiting for us. We caught the air train to Penn Station then a taxi to the Affinia 50 Hotel. This was quick, painless and the staff were polite and extremely helpful.

We stayed at the Affinia 50 Hotel for the first night. A very well situated hotel for 5th Avenue, Times Square and Bloomingdales. The rooms are spacious and have every amenity. No room service as such but you can bring in food to eat with no problem, there is a fantastic cafe next door. The hotel is also opposite the Waldorf Astoria.

The hotel has a gym and club level with complimentary tea, coffee and continental breakfast Monday-Friday. It is a great hotel to stay in for location and comfort. We visited Ground Zero, which I would recommend everyone to do, it is the most amazing experience and a little emotional.

We then stayed at the Benjamin Hotel for 2 nights. I would rate this hotel overall higher than the Affinia 50, but if it is just location you want then either is great. The rooms are very spacious and most have kitchen facilities, microwave, fridge and coffee maker. The hotel also has a great lobby bar which is a wonderful place to have drinks or snacks whilst watching the comings and goings.

If you are a fan of Sex and the City the I would recommend the Sex and the City tour, 3 hours of fun visiting places you may not necessarily visit otherwise.

Be warned though taxis in New York are plentiful but a lot of drivers do not seem to speak English and often do not know where you need to go, be patient ! You can though pay by credit/debit card via a swipe machine and they also have virtual maps of your route.
