Rome, October 2015

I have always wanted to go to Rome and was delighted when my daughter and husband surprised me with a short break trip for a special birthday (not easy when you work in travel!)

We actually stayed outside the city centre and travelled in and out but I would recommend paying a little extra and being as central as your budget allows to save time. This is also ideal as you can then go back to the hotel for a rest in between attractions!

Rome is really one big museum with artefacts just on the side of a road or really up close to allow you to really feel and appreciate them on a personal level.

It's very easy to get around with a good bus and taxi service. There is also a Metro service, although this does not go through the historical centre with only two lines. When we were there they were building another line. Of course the best way to get around is by walking and as many attractions are fairly near to each other, it’s a great way to really immerse yourself in Rome.

On our hit list were The Spanish Steps, The Pantheon (tip - look up and then at the floor), The Roman Forum, The Colosseum, The Vatican including St Peters Basilica and The Sistine Chapel. I have to say that none of these iconic sites disappointed, they were all amazing. We pre-booked all our attractions and did a part walking/part coach tour which was very good and included the Piazza's and The Pantheon. We also pre-booked tickets to The Vatican and The Colosseum - this is much better than queuing and means that your days are organised and utilising your time best whilst you are there. I can pre book all sites if required.

There are many lovely restaurants in Rome and we found that if you explored down an alleyway of one of the Piazza's then you could usually find something a bit more reasonable. With a good selection of small budget or grand hotels to choose from, there is something to offer all.

Rome really did not disappoint and I would highly recommend for a short break or as part of an Italian multi centre holiday.
