Buenos Aires March 2023

In March 2023 we travelled to Argentina to the city of Buenos Aires.

From Gatwick we flew to Madrid, then connected to the 13 hour flight into Buenos Airport.

We stayed at the Arc Recoleta Boutique hotel which is in the Recoleta region, known for its nice neighbourhood, plenty of cafes, restaurants and walking distance to the sights.

The staff were friendly, the rooms are huge, basic but everything you need. The breakfast was enough to start the day, eggs, diced sausage, pastries, bread, couple of cereals. The pool on the top floor was a great area and the Spa was also very nice.

There is a weekend market in Recoleta with arts and clothes, nice for a mooch around.

Our first stop was to get food, we found a lovely place that did Pizza's, so we shared one and with a drink and a side of fries, worked out to approx £10 each.

There is a heavy Italian influence in the city so there are pizza and pasta places everywhere.

We took the Hop On Hop Off bus as we only had 2 full days in the city. It’s a long tour so we split it over 2 days (within our 24 hour ticket). It takes you all around the sights as you wouldn’t get round them all by foot so well worth doing (approx £40 each).

The following day we visited the Recoleta Cemetery to see Eva Peron's tomb, amongst others, worth getting there early as many escorted tours gather round her tomb.

We visited Caminito by the waterfront, with its bright, colourful buildings, restaurants and street music. This is a lively place to walk around the shops and the market, it’s a taxi ride away from Recoleta and also a stop on the Hop on Hop off bus.

Of course you have to go to a Tango Show in the evening, we didn’t include the dinner which I was glad about as it was a little 'school' like sitting on long benches and quite crowded.

We chose to do just the show which was great as it meant you had your own private box in an elevated position so the stage view was excellent. Because you are picked up at the same time as the people eating you are waiting 2.5 hours before the show starts. Tip: book your own taxi to arrive later but not too late so you don’t get your private box.

The Tango dancers, the live band plus the setting of the Theatre were phenomenal, very impressive, the show lasted an hour and I am pleased we saw it. They are extremely talented dancers.

Buenos Aires was really hot, it was 38c when we were there and it was very sweaty! Come prepared.

You need Pesos, I know many sites say they take US Dollars but in reality they don’t like them. Taxis like Pesos and not many have a card payment system so you need cash. For small incidental shopping they also like Pesos.

Taxis were cheap when we travelled, much cheaper than the UK.

We found food and drink to be much the same price as the UK.

Not many people speak English but you get by with the little Spanish you may know. You also have to be a little patient as things are not as efficient or as quick as you may be used to. We found ourselves a little frustrated with many things but that is why we travel to experience different cultures.

Buenos Aires has a lovely feel to it, nice areas to walk around, grab something to eat, lots of historic buildings, I really liked it and would recommend 2 or 3 days there.

We then flew to Ushuaia - see my blog on Antarctica
