Historic Warwick, UK

Claire Summers on 13 August 2020
In August 2020 we went to stay in a cottage in Warwick, right in the heart of the town and only a 5 min walk from Warwick Castle entrance and the town centre. What a beautiful place Warwick is, I loved the old buildings, the history and also St Nicholas Park was just amazing. The park is huge with plenty of open space, you can hire boats, kayaks, canoes etc and paddle up and down on the water with views of Warwick Castle. There was a childrens amusement park, playground and what a lovely place to spend a sunny afternoon.

We visited Warwick Castle, as this was during the summer of 2020 with the social distancing in place, there were less people in the grounds which actually made it a very pleasant experience. The castle is impressive with some lovely views of Warwick once you climb to the top. I would highly recommend the Falconry Show at the Castle. The amount of birds and the size of some of them are incredible, they swoop through the seating areas and across the water and you learn a lot about them. The Castle has a Maze but this was not as exciting as it would have been due to the restrictions but it is very informative and well worth a go.

Less than a 2 minute drive away from where we stayed, there was the Warwick Race Track and a golf course. The golf course is cheap and at time of writing, very challenging as its not the best course with narrow fairways, lots of trees (plenty of places to lose balls if you golf like I do!) and the greens don’t exactly run smooth but for a few hours in the fresh air its worth it.

From our base in Warwick, we also visited Stratford upon Avon (Shakespeare's Town) which was picturesque, with the river walk and promenade, you can hop on a boat, there could be a street artist there and there are plenty of statues around of Shakespeare and his characters. We booked tickets to Tudor World which was a great step back in history, it is small and doesn’t take long to get round but its really interactive and has a lot in there, we managed to fit in the mandatory visit to a tea room and there are plenty of them so you wont go short for an afternoon tea! We also visited Leamington Spa which has plenty of shops if you fancy a bit of shopping.

For a UK break, I would highly recommend Warwick, some nice restaurants, plenty to do and some nice properties within walking distance of attractions. We stayed for a week and that was a right amount of time for what we wanted to do.
