Birthday onboard the Belmond Northern Belle

27 June 2018

We wanted to surprise our mum with a birthday treat. Something special, a day that she would remember, and a day trip on The Belmond Northern Belle seemed the perfect option. The Christmas themed six-hour train journey was wonderful from the moment we arrived at Leeds Station, greeted like royalty on the platform’s red carpet and on board the beautifully decorated carriages was no different, with first class service, champagne, cocktails and fine dining. Taking a break from the beautiful English scenery, we were entertained by the fabulous table magician and the strolling band who sang Christmas songs, and a special Happy Birthday. The atmosphere on board was magnificent, the other guests were a friendly mix of young and old, all dressed to impress. It was a truly luxury day trip and an amazing day.

Italy by Rail - Natalie Watson

04 June 2018

Our first trip to Italy started in Rome with breath-taking views of the Colosseum from the hotel’s rooftop pool, a stop off in one of Florence’s boutique hotels, a day trip to Pisa and ended with a gondola ride down Venice’s Grand Canal. After a short flight and smooth check in, we enjoyed our first Italian pizza on a cobbled side street before taking a must do tour of the Colosseum. The next day we hopped on and off the city tour bus, exploring the sites of Rome. Making a wish at Trevi Fountain, walking up the Spanish Steps. Onto Vatican City and enjoying gelato sat outside St. Peter's Basilica. Later that evening we cheered along with other guests after watching a proposal on the hotel’s rooftop! On day three the weather was glorious and with the rest of trip still ahead of us we decide to lay around the pool before spending our last night dining right outside the Colosseum and watching the sunset on Palatine Hill. The next day we left Rome and headed to our next destination, Florence, by Italian rail. Traveling first class, we enjoyed the complimentary lunch whilst looking out at Italy’s countryside. Arriving in Florence, ahead of check in time we dropped our bags off and strolled down Arno river towards Piazza della Signoria and wondered over Ponte Vecchio Bridge. We woke up to Hotel Home’s pastries and Italian coffee, we then jumped on the hop on hop off bus to higher grounds for a view of the city’s iconic landmark, the Duomo. After a stroll round The Boboli Gardens, the bus drove into Fiesole, a small town just outside Florence, which is a must for anyone wanting to see incredible views of the whole city. With Pisa only a 40 minutes train journey away we couldn’t come to Tuscany and not see The Leaning Tower of Pisa. We didn’t quite manage to get a decent photo of us holding it up! Back in Florence, we spent our final night eating more pizza and drinks on the hotels terrace. From roads to canals. Arriving in Venice we were picked up from the train station by the hotels private water taxi. Staying in Murano, we checked in and walked all around the island, in and out of shops where locals sold glass items that were made on the island. The water taxi dropped us off in Venice where we mooched around the alleyways and over the many bridges. It’s true what they say, get lost in Venice. We drank beers on St Mark’s Square, went up San Marco Campanile for stunning views of the city. Before heading back to Murano, we walked over the Rialto Bridge and enjoyed pasta in a lovely restaurant on the Grand Canal. Back in Venice we walked around Doges Palace, through the Bridge of Sighs and stopped off at Venchi for more gelato. Running low on euros, we stopped by an ATM machine, as we really couldn’t leave Venice without experiencing a famous gondola ride down the grand canal. One last trip on the water taxi to the airport brought our trip to an end and we said ciao to Italy.

New York

04 June 2018

NNew York - what a fantastic city! Whoever you go with, friends or family there is something for everyone. We (my husband, our then 11-year-old son and myself) went in August 2016 for three nights on our way home from Orlando. We were there for a good time not a long time and tried to fit in as much as possible. Three nights wasn’t long enough - there is so much to do you could visit time and time again and still not see/do everything. Our first port of call was the hop on hop off bus tour which is a fabulous way of seeing the city and getting your bearings. Travelling through Manhattan the bus takes you past all the tourist spots and provides excellent commentary and tales about the city from the bus conductor. New York has some fantastic buildings such as the Flatiron and my favourite the art deco style Chrysler. But not forgetting the most obvious The Empire State Building and a trip to the top is a must to see the amazing views of the city. Ellis Island is a well worth interesting trip to read about all the immigrants flocking to New York all those years ago. Followed by a visit to see the lady herself “the Statue of Liberty” such an iconic landmark and one of New York’s most popular tourist attractions. It was one of those “I can’t believe I’m here” moments for me standing on the island with her. Times Square was busy and buzzing and we couldn’t go to New York without seeing where the Smurf’s hung out at the M&M shop. You can shop until you drop in New York - Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Nike world, Tiffany’s to name a few favourites. Before wondering over Brooklyn Bridge. We paid our respects at the 911 memorial and the beautiful monuments, a very poignant place to visit. We spent our last day in Central Park which is big and beautiful, we could have spent hours and hours there but had to finish off your holiday with a trip to the national history museum, being “Night at the Museum” fans this was great!

CLIA Cruise Conference - Southampton

11 August 2017

After a four hour, drive to Southampton, my week started with a visit to Regent Seven Seas offices. We talked Ultra Luxury cruises, the type of cruise where some people say, "Oh very nice, I'd love to go but…” Did you know that 1.9m people cruised in 2016 - 30% of those people spent as much at the end of their cruise as ultra-luxury cruise costs? With a fleet of four medium sized ships that have an easy- going relaxed atmosphere, they are the most luxurious all-inclusive cruise. The Navigator is the smallest ship with 245 suites and holds 490 guests. Their newest ship the Explorer is their biggest ship and the most luxurious ship ever built with 375 suites and capacity to hold 750 guests. When you cruise with Regent everything is included from flights, transfers, drinks including cocktails and champagne, fine dining, shore excursions which are bookable 180days before travel to Wi-Fi, tips and service charges. Plus, selected cruises include a three-day land package. Regent Seven Seas are five-star winners of recommended Which Provider for cruise February 2017, and promise to deliver total luxury on every cruise. Day two started with a short bus ride from the hotel to the cruise terminal. The welcome was fantastic, greeted with bucks Fizz and live Bands to entertain us before embarking on the flag ship of the Cunard fleet the Queen Mary 2. The sun came out and gave us the real holiday feeling as we toured this beautiful ship. Following the recent 90m remastering of the Queen Mary 2, a luxury really is in the detail with more space at sea, elegant suites and staterooms, world class entertainment, exceptional dining and even kennels staffed by a dedicated kennel master taking care of your furry family. Did you know that the Queen Mary 2 is 72m high - 26m higher than the Statue of Liberty and is 345m long equivalent to 37 double decker buses? We were treated to a superb lunch and entertained by the Royal Cunard singers and dancers in the Queens room, which has the largest dance floor afloat. The hospitality we received whilst on board was incredible it was such a shame we had to leave. The 11th CLIA2017 Conference got underway on day three of my trip to Southampton. 2017 was the largest CLIA Conference to date with over 600 cruise suppliers and agents from across the country which had a real together feel. The conference theme was built around cruise entertainment. Starting with Robbie Williams and "Let me entertain you" unfortunately not the real Robbie but Mike Williams certainly got the room smiling, singing and dancing! Stuart Leven Chair CLIA UK & Ireland spoke about the crazy world we live in and we fell silent to remember the victims of the Manchester Terror Attack. He spoke about reasons for the industry working together to offer customers the right dreams so they can create great memories. Brexit and how it's business as usual for us and our customers. We heard about the latest developments at Carnival & Royal Caribbean. Did you know that one in every two cruise passengers in the world travels on a Carnival Corporation Ship? A surprise guest appearance from Country File Presenter John Craven shared why he loves river cruising. He was converted after a rough crossing and decided calmer waters appealed to him and his wife. Another reason why River Cruise gets John’s vote over the ocean is that you get to see more of the destination and get a real value for money feel, although he did say he still enjoys ocean cruising in the Caribbean. A definite highlight of the day was being invited to spend a week on board an AmaWaterways River Cruise, which is an exciting opportunity to experience river cruise discover local culture and sights and then hop back onto the luxurious river cruise ship and sail to the next stunning city or charming town. The hard part will be choosing which itinerary in Europe or Asia. Did you know that Cruising is one of the safest ways to travel? Moving back to the theme of entertainment and Marc Hogan Edinburgh Festival comedian talked about what makes a great communicator, having a can-do attitude and seeing that opportunities are all around us. Our final treat of the day was from the Wilkes Academy of Dance and more singing and dancing this time from the musical Greece. The final day of my trip to Southampton and everything cruise saw us embarking onto the Royal Caribbean ship Navigator of the Seas. Again, the hospitable was fantastic. The day started with an Ice Dancing performance before leisurely wandering around the ship, watching families excitingly arriving to start their own cruise holiday experience. The ships incredible features include the FlowRider® surf simulator, climbing wall, outdoor cinema screen, and a host of amazing restaurants serving delicious cuisine from around the world, and again lunch certainly did not disappoint. Jonathan Wilkes from the Wilkes Academy of Dance spoke about the future of entertainment and the talent on board cruise ships. Think Broadway shows complete with Broadway actors and actresses. The final word came from Nick Weir Vice President of Entertainment for Royal Caribbean International, before inviting us to experience Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas next May, was to tell everyone to get over the stigma of the cruise, try it and they will not be disappointed! They say that there is a cruise ship for everyone and I must admit that cruise conference week, opened my eyes and mind to cruising and can’t wait to take my own family on board one of the amazing ships the cruise travel industry as to offer.
