Solar Eclipse 2026 where to view in Spain

Alison Nicholls on 12 Aug 2026

The August 12, 2026, total solar eclipse will sweep across northern Spain, with major cities in the path of totality including Zaragoza, Valencia, Bilbao, Santander, Gijón, A Coruña, Palma (Mallorca), and Logroño, with cities like Madrid and Barcelona experiencing a deep partial eclipse, just outside totality, as the path crosses the Iberian Peninsula from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, offering sunset views over the sea in the Balearics.

Cities in the Path of Totality:

Northern Coast: A Coruña, Gijón, Santander, Bilbao, Oviedo, Lugo.

Inland North: Vitoria-Gasteiz, Burgos, Logroño, Palencia, Soria, Zaragoza, Teruel.

Mediterranean Coast: Valencia, Castellón de la Plana, Tarragona (parts).

Balearic Islands: Palma (Majorca), Alcúdia, Port de Pollença, Ibiza.

Where to view in totality

Spain offers some of the very best vantage points in Europe to experience this extraordinary eclipse in style. Along the lush, emerald coastline of Galicia, your eclipse journey begins with dramatic Atlantic views and beautifully clear skies, while the chic, bohemian island of Ibiza will fall under the moon’s shadow just moments later. From west to east, a string of Spanish regions lies directly in the path of totality, creating a rare opportunity to pair a once-in-a-lifetime celestial event with a truly memorable holiday.

If you prefer the energy and elegance of a city break, there are several superb urban bases to choose from. A Coruña, Valencia, Zaragoza, Palma and Bilbao all sit within the path of totality, offering a sophisticated blend of culture, architecture and gastronomy to enjoy before and after the main event. Madrid and Barcelona will be just outside the path, so for the full eclipse experience we will guide you towards the very best located cities and regions.

Should the skies be kind on 12 August, this is also a wonderful chance to connect with Spain’s wild beauty. You could find yourself in a protected national park or peaceful biosphere reserve as the daylight softens, the temperature dips and the landscape is cast into an otherworldly twilight. Then, as the stars emerge, you can linger a little longer, savouring the stillness and stargazing in some of Spain’s most pristine, unspoilt settings.

Key Viewing Aspects:

Sunset Totality: Expect a dramatic sunset totality over the sea in the Balearic Islands and along the Mediterranean coast.

Low Sun Angle: The sun will be low on the horizon, so clear views of the horizon are crucial.

Beyond Totality: Madrid and Barcelona will see over 99% of the sun covered but won't experience full darkness.

Tips for Viewing:

Check Weather: Aim for inland areas like Castilla y León or Aragón for potentially clearer skies than coastal regions.

Plan for Sunset: If on the coast or islands, find elevated spots (cliffs, miradores) for unobstructed sunset views.

Eye Protection: Use certified solar glasses for all phases except the brief moment of totality.
