A festive visit to Krakow with friends

Alison Shipman on 27 Nov 2025

In November I visited Krakow with 4 friends for a special birthday. We ate in some fabulous restaurants, some with live music too. We took the opportunity to visit Aushwitz & Birkenau which was very moving. Krakow is such a lovely City with some much to see... Come and see for yourself!

A Snowy, Moving Visit to Auschwitz & Birkenau

Our journey started on a morning when snowflakes fell from the sky and the cold nipped at our fingertips—the sort of weather that makes you huddle a little closer to your friends. Visiting Auschwitz and Birkenau in such conditions was humbling and deeply moving. The bleakness of the weather seemed to echo the gravity of what we were seeing, making the stories and history feel even more profound. It’s an experience that stays with you, and it’s one I feel privileged (and changed) to have witnessed.

Touring Krakow by Trolley: Old Town, Jewish Quarter & Ghetto

Back in the heart of the city, we decided to hop on a heated trolley tour to see as much as possible (and give our noses a break from the cold!). Wrapped up in hats and scarves, we rattled through the storybook streets of Krakow’s Old Town, admired the creative energy of the Jewish Quarter, and explored the haunting history of the Ghetto. The whole city feels alive with stories—every corner has tales waiting to be discovered.

Castle Grounds & The Dragon’s Den

We followed the steps up to Wawel Castle, strolling the grounds with the crisp November air making everything feel a little sharper and fresher. Of course, we couldn’t resist seeking out the legendary Wawel Dragon—who, in true Krakow fashion, delights everyone by breathing real fire. The playful magic of these legends sprinkled a bit of warmth into our chilly day.

Beneath the main square, we found Krakow’s hidden gem: the Rynek Underground Museum. It’s part time machine, part treasure hunt, and the perfect place to escape the chill while diving deep into the city’s medieval past. Wandering these tunnels—lost in centuries-old secrets and interactive exhibits—was a delight for both history buffs and grown-up explorers.

Wawel Dragon Christmas Markets: Krakow’s Festive Heartbeat

Even in November, Krakow’s Christmas markets were already buzzing. The grand square came alive with wooden stalls, fairy lights, and that irresistible scent of mulled wine, sizzling pierogi, and sweet treats. We sipped, we sampled, we shopped for decorations and enjoyed festive songs drifting through the cold evening air. It’s pure hygge, Polish-style.

Why Krakow in November is Something Special

If you love cities at their most atmospheric—when there’s a chill in the air, history at your feet, and the promise of Christmas just beginning—Krakow in November is a dream. It’s a place that balances history, warmth, and a little snow-dusted magic, especially when shared with friends.
