Turkey: Timeless Wonders, Breathtaking Balloons and Coastline Magic

My Summer Adventure from Istanbul to Fethiye

Barbara Sutton on 06 Jul 2025

Turkey’s magic is in its contrasts: ancient and modern, lively and tranquil, well-trodden yet always surprising. My summer adventure shared with TC friends and guided by local expertise at every step was a journey I’ll never forget. Here’s a taste of what you can experience.

Istanbul: Where East Meets West

We began where continents meet. Our morning Bosphorus cruise revealed Istanbul’s layered history as we glided past palaces and bustling neighbourhoods. Afterwards we wandered the Hippodrome, marvelled at the Blue Mosque’s mosaics, explored Topkapi Palace’s lush gardens and museums and stood in awe inside Hagia Sophia. The atmospheric underground Cisterns, familiar to Dan Brown fans were an extra special highlight for me, their haunting beauty revealed by clever lighting. Definitely not to be missed!

Magical Cappadocia: Balloons at Sunrise, Cave & Valley Discoveries and Real Turkish Encounters

Next it was on to Cappadocia accessed by road but better by air, a region like nowhere else. Goreme, Uchisar and Urgup are the main bases for exploring valleys filled with fairy chimneys, staying in ancient cave houses and exploring the open-air museums of Zelve and Goreme.

Our sunrise hot air balloon flight was the trip’s unmissable highlight, soaring gently above surreal landscapes as the valleys lit up beneath us.  Marvelling at the 50 + other balloons so expertly piloted navigating their flight above the valleys and peaks.  The early start was more than worth it!

We continued our way through Devrent (or Imaginery) Valley and Pasabagi’s extraordinary phallic rock formations then pushed ourselves with a climb up to the top of Uchisar Castle for the most amazing panoramic views.

At night we were welcomed into a local family’s home where we were treated to a home cooked meal with vegetables from their own garden with freshly prepared bread, yoghurts, dips and aubergines, everything tasted of tradition and warmth. Music, laughter and donning traditional headwear made it a night to treasure.

But Cappadocia is much more than balloons and cave houses. There’s adventure for every traveller, from horse riding and quad biking to leisurely exploring the surrounding villages by car.

Pamukkale: Cotton Castles and Captivating Rituals

From Cappadocia to Pamukkale, the landscape transformed into brilliant white terraces. Pamukkale, meaning “Cotton Castles”, is famed for its calcite pools and historic Roman ruins. While these days you can only paddle, not swim, it remains breathtaking. It does get hot here so remember plenty of sun protection as temperatures soared over 40 degrees during our visit.
A personal bucket-list moment came true here in the evening as I eexperienced an unforgettable Whirling Dervish ceremony, mesmerising in its sacred stillness and motion.

Fethiye: Coasting into Paradise

We ended our journey on Turkey’s turquoise coast. Our final night was spent sailing from Fethiye aboard a traditional gulet boat, fondly remembering from holidays in the 80s and 90s. The gulet is a wonderful way to explore hidden coves, swim in crystal waters and share great local food as the sun sets over the Mediterranean. For our group it was a perfect, relaxed finale after a week of exploration ending with laughter, swims and farewell drinks to toast a special adventure.
