A Family City Break in Copenhagen: Culture, Fun & Gluten-Free Treats

Carli Lane on 21 October 2025
Looking for a family-friendly city break that’s easy, affordable, and packed with charm? Copenhagen might just be the perfect choice. We recently took a midweek trip to the Danish capital, and it turned out to be one of the best short breaks we’ve ever had.

Getting There and Around

Flying midweek not only saved us money but also meant fewer crowds – a definite win when travelling with kids. From Copenhagen Airport, getting into the city was a breeze. We hopped on the train and were in the city centre within minutes. Tickets were just £8 for the four of us – proof that public transport in Copenhagen is both budget-friendly and brilliantly efficient.

Where We Stayed

We based ourselves at Hotel Absalon, a stylish and family-friendly spot just a short walk from the station and the world-famous Tivoli Gardens. The rooms were cosy, the staff welcoming, and the breakfast buffet was a real highlight – especially since they provided fresh gluten-free bread, brought right to our table. It’s these thoughtful touches that make travelling with dietary requirements so much easier.

What We Did

Copenhagen has a wonderful mix of attractions, from quirky museums to peaceful parks. Here are some of our highlights:

Agnete and the Merman Sculpture – A hauntingly beautiful bronze sculpture hidden beneath the water near Gammel Strand – a lovely stop for something a little different.

Tivoli Gardens – A must-visit for families! With its mix of fairground rides, food stalls, and twinkling lights, it’s magical day and night. We were lucky enough to visit during the Halloween celebrations, and the park looked absolutely spectacular. It definitely got busier after dark, but during the day there were no queues — we could just stroll straight onto the rides!

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! – Perfect for curious kids (and adults) who love the weird and wonderful.

Hans Christian Andersen Museum – A fascinating dive into the fairytales that shaped so much of our childhood.

The Museum of Illusions – Great fun for all ages, with interactive exhibits that will have you laughing and snapping photos.

Nyhavn - Copenhagen’s most iconic waterfront, famous for its colourful 17th-century buildings and lively cafés. It’s the perfect spot for a stroll, snapping photos, or enjoying a relaxing drink by the canal while watching the boats go by. We took a short walk, but it was very busy and a little overwhelming for the kids. Still, it’s a must-visit and an absolutely beautiful spot.

The Tube – An immersive experience with 15 different rooms full of surprises! Challenge your balance and your senses. The ball pit was definitely my youngest’s favourite room — she could have stayed there all day!

Foodie Finds

Copenhagen’s food scene is a dream, especially for anyone needing gluten-free options. We managed to eat safely at the Hard Rock Café, Pico Pizza, and a couple of food vendors at Tivoli Food Hall — Zócalo (Mexican) and Cocks & Cows (great burgers, though sadly their fries aren’t cooked separately).

A special shoutout goes to H.U.G. Bakery, where we found the most delicious gluten-free pastries. It’s a must-visit for coeliacs or anyone who simply loves a good bakery treat.

Fair warning — eating out in Copenhagen isn’t cheap! 💸

Final Thoughts

Copenhagen has that rare mix of efficiency, culture, and charm that makes it perfect for a family getaway. From affordable transport and welcoming hotels to exciting attractions and gluten-free delights, it’s a city that truly caters to everyone.
