Sri Lanka – A Journey Full of Smiles, Spice & Stunning Scenery

I’ve just returned from the most incredible educational trip to Sri Lanka, and it’s safe to say this destination completely stole my heart. From the moment we arrived, the island felt alive - a mix of colour, culture, wildlife, and the warmest smiles you could ever imagine.

Hosted by the amazing team at Columbus Tours, we explored from Colombo down to the beaches of Bentota, discovering so much along the way. Our guides, Chanaka and Priyal, were exceptional - knowledgeable, fun, friendly, and full of fascinating stories that brought every place to life. Saying goodbye to them at the end was actually pretty emotional!

Wildlife, Wonder & “Wow” Moments

Sri Lanka is one of those places that has something new to offer every single day.

Our journey began in Colombo before heading to Sigiriya, where we took a thrilling jeep safari through Minneriya National Park - home to herds of wild elephants. Watching them gather around the watering holes at sunset was such a magical sight.

The next morning we climbed the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, known as Lion Rock. Reaching the top just as the sun rose over the misty plains was unforgettable - definitely one of those “wow” travel moments that stays with you forever.

From there, we visited the incredible Dambulla Cave Temples, filled with centuries-old Buddha statues and colourful murals carved into the rock face. It’s a spiritual, peaceful place that feels worlds away from everyday life.

In Kandy, we visited the Temple of the Tooth, one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred Buddhist sites, set beside a shimmering lake. Our timing was perfect - just as we arrived, the heavens opened for our first taste of a Sri Lankan rainstorm, and we found ourselves walking barefoot through the warm rain to reach the temple. It somehow made the moment even more special - calm, spiritual, and unforgettable.

Scenic Beauty & Serene Escapes

From the cultural heart of Kandy, we travelled into the misty hills of Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka’s tea country. Lush green plantations stretched as far as the eye could see, and we visited a working tea factory to watch the process from leaf to cup (with plenty of tasting, of course!).

Then came our adventure to Yala National Park, where we were lucky enough to spot, not just one, but two leopards together during our safari - an incredibly rare and exciting experience. Back at our hotel in the heart of Yala, we even had a surprise visitor: a curious elephant wandered right up to the pool! Only in Sri Lanka!

We continued south to Galle, wandering the cobbled streets of the old Dutch fort - a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with boutiques, cafes, and colonial charm - before finishing the trip with some well-deserved beach time in Bentota.

Moments That Made Us Smile

Some of the most memorable moments weren’t even planned; like our spontaneous tuk-tuk ride in Ella to the famous Nine Arches Bridge, arriving just in time to see a train crossing! It was pure luck and such a pinch-me moment.

And then there were the laughs - travelling with my fellow Travel Counsellors made this trip extra special. We shared unforgettable experiences, countless giggles, and I’ve come home with friends for life. Who knew that bus journeys could create so many fun memories!

The food deserves its own mention. From spicy curries to fragrant rice dishes, tropical fruits, and incredible seafood — every meal was a celebration of flavour. Sri Lankan cuisine is bursting with colour and freshness, and every dish we tried came with a story.
