Singapore and Sentosa

A Playground For Children And Grown‑Ups

Cornel Schalkwyk on 31 Jul 2025

If you are thinking about visiting Singapore with children, I can promise you this: it is so much more than just a stopover. In summer 2025, I spent five nights in Singapore with my eight‑year‑old daughter, travelling as a single parent, and it turned out to be one of our favourite family trips so far. We used Singapore as a twin-centre with Bali, and it worked brilliantly: fun and excitement first, time to adjust to the jet lag, then on to relaxation, culture and beach time in Bali. For families, I highly recommend this combination. Here is what our time in Singapore looked like and why I think it works so well for families.

Why We Chose Sentosa Island As Our Base

For this trip we stayed on Sentosa Island, and it turned out to be the perfect base for families. Sentosa has a relaxed, resort-style feel, yet you are only a short journey from central Singapore. It is:

  • Easy to get around with children
  • Packed with attractions and activities
  • Calm and safe, ideal if you are travelling solo with kids
  • You really do feel like you are on a family resort holiday, with the bonus of having a world-class city just across the water.

Sentosa: A Playground For Children And GrownUps

Sentosa itself is fantastic for families, with something for every age and energy level. Some of the highlights I now regularly recommend to my family clients include:

Palawan Beach

Palawan Beach

For a slower, sandbetweenyourtoes kind of day, Palawan Beach is ideal. It has a relaxed, family-friendly feel, with soft sand, calm water and plenty of space for children to play. My daughter loved paddling, building sandcastles and simply running around in the sea breeze. There are cafés and facilities nearby, so it is easy to spend a few unhurried hours here, and it offers a lovely balance to the high-energy theme parks and waterparks elsewhere on Sentosa.

Universal Studios Singapore

Universal Studios Singapore

A full-on, fun-filled day of rides, shows and character experiences, ideal for schoolage children and tweens. Expect big smiles, a lot of excitement and a very tired child by the end of the day. It is a great way to kick off the holiday and get everyone in the mood for adventure.

Adventure Cove Waterpark

Adventure Cove Singapore

In the Singapore heat, Adventure Cove Waterpark is a brilliant option. There are:

  • Slides for thrill-seekers
  • Lazy rivers for more relaxed floating
  • Plenty of family-friendly splash areas

It is one of those places where children can burn off energy while you enjoy a mix of fun and downtime together.

Wings of Time

Wings of Time show

In the evening, Wings of Time is a must-do. It is an outdoor show set against the sea with:

  • Fireworks
  • Lasers
  • Water and light effects

My daughter absolutely loved it. It is a lovely way to round off a day on Sentosa and feels very special without being too late for younger children.

Sentosa Sensoryscape At Night

Sentosa Sensoryscape

After dinner, we really enjoyed walking through Sentosa Sensoryscape. It is a beautifully lit, immersive walkway with changing colours and sounds. For families, it offers:

  • A gentle evening activity after a busy day
  • A chance for children to explore and be curious
  • A calm, almost magical atmosphere that is perfect before heading back to the hotel

Gardens by the Bay: A MustDo For Families

Although we were based on Sentosa, one of the absolute highlights of our trip was our visit to Gardens by the Bay on the mainland. I now recommend it to almost every family I work with.

Even after seeing endless photos, experiencing it in person with my eightyearold daughter felt very special. We explored four main areas, and each offered something different for families.

Cloud Forest

Cloud Forest - Jurassic Park themed

This was my daughter’s favourite. The Cloud Forest is a cool, misty indoor world centred around a soaring waterfall. Elevated walkways spiral up through lush greenery, and the views become more impressive the higher you go.

For families, it is:

  • A welcome break from the tropical heat and humidity
  • Fascinating and fun for children, who love the dramatic waterfall and mist
  • An almost “otherworldly” experience that feels like stepping into a film set

Flower Dome

Flower Dome

The Flower Dome is calmer and more open, filled with themed gardens and colourful floral displays. We took our time wandering, spotting different plants and taking photos.

It works well for children because:

  • There is plenty of space to move around
  • Lots of bright colours and interesting features to notice
  • Benches and shaded areas make it easy to pause and rest

OCBC Skyway (Skywalk)

Skywalk

The OCBC Skyway is an aerial walkway that winds between the Supertrees. From up here you get incredible views over the gardens and the city skyline.

If your family is comfortable with heights, it is a fantastic way to:

  • Appreciate how cleverly nature and architecture have been blended
  • Capture some brilliant family photos
  • Enjoy a different perspective of Singapore

Supertree Observatory

Supertree Observatory

We also visited the Supertree Observatory at the top of one of the Supertrees. The panoramic views of Marina Bay and the wider city are stunning.

For older children and adults, it feels:

  • Slightly futuristic, like you are in a scifi movie
  • Very memorable, especially at certain times of day when the light is softer
  • Perfect for those “wow” photos to remember the trip by

The Supertree Light Show: A Magical Evening

If your timings allow, I highly recommend doing what we did: visiting Cloud Forest and Flower Dome during the day, then returning in the evening for the Supertree light and music show.

As the sky darkens, the Supertrees light up in time to music, and the whole area takes on a wonderfully atmospheric feel. It is:

  • Magical for children and adults alike
  • A gentle, uplifting way to end a busy day
  • One of those experiences that really stays with you

Why Singapore And Bali Work So Well Together

We spent five nights in Singapore on our way to Bali, and I would absolutely recommend this as a twin-centre trip for families.  This combination gives you:

  • Time in Singapore to adjust to jet lag, settle into the time zone and enjoy exciting activities
  • A mix of theme parks, nature, city views and cultural experiences
  • Then a slower-paced stay in Bali with more focus on relaxation, beach time and local culture

By the time you arrive in Bali, everyone is already in “holiday mode”, and you can really make the most of the calmer pace.

How I Can Help Plan Your Family Trip

If you are considering Singapore, either as a stopover or a main family holiday, I can:

  • Help you decide how many nights to spend on Sentosa and in the city
  • Recommend family-friendly hotels that suit your budget and style
  • Suggest the best order for activities so little ones do not get overtired
  • Pre-plan and advise on key tickets and timings to keep things smooth and stress-free
  • Build a seamless twin-centre itinerary with Bali or another nearby destination

Every family is different, and my goal is to create a trip that feels right for yours: exciting, safe, well-paced and full of happy memories.
