Your insider guide from Your Travel Counsellor

Donna Gilbert on 04 Feb 2026

If you are dreaming about the prettiest Amalfi Coast towns to visit, pour yourself an espresso, imagine the scent of lemons in the air and let me whisk you away. The Amalfi Coast is one of those places that looks like it has been filtered in real life. Think dramatic cliffs, pastel villages, sparkling blue seas and food that will ruin you for pasta anywhere else.

This legendary stretch of coastline in southern Italy is stitched together by the famous Amalfi Coast Drive, a road that clings to the cliffs like a stylish ribbon. It is adored by honeymooners, adventurers, families and anyone with a soft spot for la dolce vita. Yes, it is popular. But I know exactly where the magic still lives.Let me show you the prettiest Amalfi Coast towns to visit and how to enjoy them like a pro.

Positano

The postcard that comes to life

Positano is the Amalfi Coast showstopper. A cascade of peach, lemon and blush coloured houses tumbling down the cliffs towards the sea. It is romantic, dramatic and unapologetically glamorous.

Why you will love it

  • Gorgeous beaches and boat trips along the coast
  • Chic boutiques selling linen, leather sandals and summer dresses
  • Sunset cocktails with views that make you weak at the knees

Top tip from me: Visit during the day for the views, but stay for the evening. When the day trippers leave, Positano exhales and becomes pure magic.

Nerano and Marina di Cantone

For food lovers and beach dreamers

Just beyond Positano, Nerano is a little slice of heaven best reached by boat. It spills down to Marina di Cantone, a pebbly beach with crystal clear water and some of the best food on the coast.

Why you will love it

  • Swimming in gin clear seas
  • Legendary local dishes like spaghetti with courgettes and cheese
  • Relaxed beach restaurants with your toes in the water
  • This is where you come to slow down and eat very, very well.

Montepertuso and Nocelle

For walkers and view chasers

High above Positano sit the tiny mountain villages of Montepertuso and Nocelle. They are perfect if you want cooler air, fewer crowds and views that go on forever.

Why you will love it

  • Quiet villages with a real local feel
  • Jaw dropping panoramas of the coastline
  • Access to the famous Footpath of the Gods hike

You can bus up and walk back down through ancient stone steps and lemon groves. It is one of my favourite ways to see the coast.

Praiano

Low key, lovely and oh so relaxed

Praiano is the insider’s choice. It is close to Positano but far calmer. No big sights, no rush, just sea views, sunshine and that unmistakable Amalfi perfume of orange and lemon blossom.

Why you will love it

  • Fewer tourists and more space to breathe
  • Pretty beaches and hidden coves
  • Easy access to the Footpath of the Gods

Perfect for couples, solo travellers and anyone who wants the Amalfi Coast without the crowds.

Amalfi

Historic heart of the coast

Amalfi gave its name to the entire coastline. It is lively, buzzing and full of history. Yes, it gets busy, but arrive early or visit out of season and you will see why it was once a powerful maritime republic.

Why you will love it

  • The striking Duomo with its grand steps and striped façade
  • Narrow lanes full of shops and cafés
  • Beautiful walks into the green Valle delle Ferriere

Stop for a cappuccino and a flaky pastry in the main square and watch the world go by. It is very good for the soul.

Atrani

Small, sweet and timeless

Right next door to Amalfi is tiny Atrani. It feels like stepping into a different era. Think archways, staircases and a peaceful little piazza.

Why you will love it

  • Authentic Italian village atmosphere
  • Fewer crowds and slower pace
  • Lovely spots for lunch and aperitivo

This is Amalfi’s quieter, cooler sibling and I adore it.

Ravello

The jewel in the crown

Ravello floats high above the coast on a dramatic bluff. It is elegant, serene and utterly romantic. Artists and musicians have fallen in love with it for centuries and you will too.

Why you will love it

  • Spectacular gardens with endless sea views
  • Peaceful atmosphere once day trippers leave
  • One of the most beautiful sunset spots in Italy

Visit Villa Cimbrone and stand on the Terrace of Infinity. I promise you will not forget it.

Minori and Maiori

For beach lovers and pastry fans

Further east, the coast becomes gentler and less glitzy. Minori and Maiori are friendly, relaxed and perfect if you want great value and a proper beach holiday.

Why you will love it

  • Long sandy beaches
  • Roman ruins and seaside promenades
  • Some of the best cake shops on the coast

If you like your holidays with a side of sunshine and sweets, this is your place.

Cetara

Authentic and deliciously different

Cetara is a working fishing village and one of my favourite hidden gems. It feels real, lived in and wonderfully unpolished.

Why you will love it

  • Traditional fishing boats and local life
  • Famous anchovies and rich seafood dishes
  • Fantastic restaurants by the harbour

This is where you taste the true Amalfi Coast.

Vietri sul Mare

Colourful and creative

At the eastern edge of the coast sits Vietri sul Mare, known for its vibrant ceramics. It is cheerful, artistic and less focused on tourism.

Why you will love it

  • Bright tiled buildings and churches
  • Great beach and lively atmosphere
  • Amazing ceramics shopping

If you want a base with personality, Vietri is a brilliant choice.
