A City Break in Vancouver

Vancouver BC

Emma Vipond on 01 Dec 2025

A city where mountains meet the ocean, wildlife roams city parks, and every day promises new discoveries—Vancouver captivated me from the first moment. Recently, I spent five unforgettable days exploring this West Coast gem, immersing myself in its festive spirit, vibrant culture, and premium experiences. Here’s a glimpse into my journey, and just a hint of what I can create for your next tailor-made getaway.

Arrival: City Lights and Coastal Flavours

Touching down in Vancouver, we were whisked straight to the elegant Sutton Place Hotel in downtown. The hotel’s timeless décor, attentive service, and unbeatable central location instantly set the tone for our stay. After a chance to settle in and freshen up, we stepped out into the city’s vibrant dining scene for our first evening in Vancouver.

We headed to Coast on Alberni Street—a celebrated spot famous for its fresh West Coast seafood and lively atmosphere. Over delicious plates of perfectly prepared salmon, we toasted the start of our adventure, already feeling the promise of so much more to explore.Sutton Place HotelSutton Place HotelSutton Place Hotel

Day 1: Urban Greenspaces and Winter Magic

Our adventure began just steps from downtown at the iconic Stanley Park—1,000 acres of forest, ocean views, and cultural landmarks. We paused for photos at the famous totem poles before heading onwards, the city skyline always just behind a curtain of towering evergreens.

From there, it was a scenic drive to Grouse Mountain and a cable car ride through the clouds into a festive, snow-dusted wonderland. Our guide led us on an eco tour among frosted trees (though the resident grizzlies, Grinder and Coola, were hibernating!). A delicious lunch at Altitude’s Bistro capped off a truly Christmassy morning.

The afternoon brought adventure at Capilano Suspension Bridge Park—a dramatic 70-metre-high crossing, treetop walkways, and the exhilarating Cliffwalk, all dazzlingly lit for the Christmas holidays. Eagles soared overhead and twinkling lights set the forest aglow—a magical winter scene just 15 minutes from the city centre.

Evening saw us stepping into the glow and lively atmosphere of Vancouver’s Christmas Market, where European charm, handmade gifts, and tempting treats including spiced glühwein and maple syrup  wrapped up a perfect first day.Stanley ParkStanley ParkGrouse MountainGrouse MountainGrouse MountainGrouse MountainGrouse MountainGrouse MountainGrouse MountainGrouse MountainCapilano Suspension Bridge ParkCapilano Suspension Bridge ParkCapilano Suspension Bridge ParkCapilano Suspension Bridge ParkCapilano Suspension Bridge ParkCapilano Suspension Bridge ParkCapilano Suspension Bridge ParkCapilano Suspension Bridge ParkCapilano Suspension Bridge Park

Day 2: Sky-High Thrills, Foodie Finds and Botanical Bliss

We began the morning with a private tour and breakfast at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre—a contemporary downtown icon with sweeping city views and a chic atmosphere.

Then, it was time for lift-off! From Harbour Air’s seaplane terminal, we soared above Vancouver’s glimmering cityscape, Stanley Park, and majestic mountains. A scenic flight over this coastal metropolis is utterly unforgettable, offering brand new perspectives on its beauty.

In the afternoon, the adventure continued on Vancouver’s Skytrain to Yaletown, before a private Aquabus ferry glided us along False Creek. Arriving at Granville Island, we  joined an exclusive Foodie Tour led by Maggy, sampling artisan delicacies at the bustling public market. Sourdough, charcuterie, chocolate and more—each bite a window into Vancouver’s culinary soul. The island’s galleries and shops offered the ideal stroll to round off the day.

That evening, VanDusen Botanical Gardens beckoned. As the sun faded, the Festival of Lights transformed 15 garden acres into a spectacular winter wonderland, with over a million sparkling lights illuminating lakes, groves, and winding paths. It was pure magic—a photographer’s dream, and a festive highlight for all ages.

To cap off the enchantment, we headed to  Michelin-recommended Moltaqa Moroccan restaurant  in Yaletown. The setting brimmed with North African charm—vibrant tiles and glowing lanterns. We savoured refined Moroccan dishes, from fragrant tagines to delicate pastries, all paired with heartfelt hospitality. It was a feast for every sense and the perfect ending to a truly magical evening.Harbour Lights SeaplaneHarbour Lights SeaplaneHarbour Lights SeaplaneHarbour Lights SeaplaneHarbour Lights SeaplaneHarbour Lights SeaplaneAquabusGranville IslandGranville IslandGranville IslandGranville Island MarketGranville Island MarketGranville Island MarketGranville Island MarketGranville Island MarketGranville Island MarketVanDusen Botanical GardensVanDusen Botanical GardensVanDusen Botanical Gardens

Day 4: History, Heights, and a Birthday to Remember

Today was by birthday and a celebration from start to finish, complete with some of Vancouver’s most iconic hotel experiences.

The day began with a site visit and delightful breakfast at the stunning Pan Pacific Hotel, perched right at the harbourfront. The sweeping views of the mountains and water from the bedrooms were simply breath-taking, and the warm service made it a perfect way to start a birthday in style.

Next we stepped back in time with the Forbidden Vancouver Walking tour where stories of intrigue, prohibition, and colourful city legends brought the streets alive and added a touch of adventure to the day.

Our midday highlight was an elegant lunch at the Fairmont Waterfront. Known for its sophisticated cuisine and sustainable, locally-inspired menus, the setting here made every bite feel extra special. With farm-to-table freshness and panoramic city vistas, it was luxurious yet welcoming—a wonderful birthday treat.

After a thrilling “Flyover” ride above British Columbia’s wilderness, we walked to Gastown, Vancouver's historic district known for its Victorian architecture, cobblestone streets, and iconic Steam Clock. Then we took in 360-degree city views from Vancouver Lookout—an ideal way to reflect on our journey from above and see the city in a whole new light.

Our farewell dinner at Michelin-recommended Ophelia was pure celebration, with vibrant Mexican flavours, curated cocktails, and a lively atmosphere. I truly couldn’t have wished for a more perfect birthday finale.Forbidden Vancouver Walking tourBirthday LunchGastown Steam ClockOphelia

Day 5: Underwater Wonders and Stylish Send-offs

On our final morning, we enjoyed a private tour of Vancouver Aquarium in Stanley Park where we watched playful sea otters, interacted with jellyfish, and learnt from passionate conservationists. Afterwards, we lunched at Nook in leafy Kitsilano, savouring wood-fired pizzas and the local vibe.

No trip is complete without a little retail therapy so we finished at McArthurGlen Designer Outlet, just three minutes from the airport. Chic finds and exclusive deals made this stylish stop the perfect way to bid farewell to Vancouver.Vancouver AquariumVancouver AquariumVancouver AquariumVancouver AquariumVancouver Aquarium
