Is January Really The Best Month to Book Your Holiday??

Jessica Cullen on 29 Jan 2026

Lets talk about this myth/truth!

Every year, I see the same pattern repeat itself.

A client messages me in March, April or even June asking about a holiday they had been considering earlier in the year. We look at the same destination, similar dates and the same type of hotel they originally had in mind.

The only difference?
The price.

And it is almost always higher.

Why January matters so much in travel

January is not busy by accident. It is when the whole of the travel industry releases its strongest offers, widest availability and most flexible booking options.

Airlines open up more seats at their best prices.
Hotels release their most desirable rooms.
Tour operators launch early booking incentives and added value extras.

All of this happens at the same time, which is the key point many people miss. There are sales at other points in the year, but there is no other month when airlines, hotels and suppliers are all competing so heavily for bookings.

That competition only benefits you and your pocket!

The myth of waiting for a better deal

Many people assume that if they wait, prices will drop. In reality, the opposite usually happens.

As January ends, the strongest offers are withdrawn. Availability reduces and demand increases. The result is simple. Prices rise.

Yes, you may still see promotions later in the year, but they tend to be limited to specific dates, restricted room types or less convenient flight times. They rarely apply to the most popular destinations during peak travel periods.

Waiting does not usually save money. It usually reduces choice.

What actually happens when you book later

When clients come to me later in the year, the conversations change.

Flight times are no longer ideal.
Preferred hotel rooms are sold out.
Travel dates have less flexibility around weather, school holidays or events.

At that point, there are usually only two options. Compromise on what you originally wanted, or pay more to secure it.

Neither feels great, especially when it could have been avoided.

The advantage of booking early

Booking in January is not about rushing into a decision. It is about protecting your options.

Early booking often means lower deposits, giving you time to spread the cost. It allows more flexibility to adjust plans before prices rise. Most importantly, it gives you peace of mind knowing your holiday is secured on your terms.

You are choosing, rather than settling.

Why January is my busiest month

There is a reason January is the busiest month in my business, and it is the month I thrive in most.

This is when smart planning happens. Clients are thinking ahead, asking the right questions and making informed decisions. It is proactive travel planning rather than reactive booking.

My role is to guide that process, highlight the opportunities available and help clients secure the best possible value for their holiday, not just the lowest headline price.

Final thoughts

If travel is on your mind this year, January is the moment to act. Not because of pressure, but because this is when the industry gives you the most control.

Planning early is not about spending more.
It is about getting more for what you spend.
