Kos, Greece: My Personal Island Guide for Culture, Food, and Fabulous Beaches
There’s something truly magical about Kos; I fell under its spell from my very first visit in 2013, and have visited several times since. From ancient ruins and sun-drenched beaches to platters of mouth-watering mezze, this island offers the perfect blend of rich history and effortless holiday enjoyment. Here’s my own take on why Kos deserves a spot at the top of your travel wishlist, with special love for Kos Town, Kardamena, and Kefalos.
Kos Town: A Living Museum by the Sea Wandering through Kos Town, history is all around you. I’ve strolled along the harbour where crusader castles stand watch, lost track of time in the shaded plane trees of Hippocrates Square, and found ancient mosaics just steps away from chic waterside cafés. One of my favourite mornings was spent exploring the Asklepion – a healing sanctuary steeped in myth, nature, and breathtaking views over the island.
For foodies, Kos Town is an adventure in itself. I love discovering family-run tavernas tucked away on side streets, where menus burst with Mediterranean flavours: think grilled octopus, zesty tzatziki, and local wine perfectly chilled for those balmy evenings.
Kardamena: Where the Days Turn Effortlessly to Nights Kardamena has a magnetic energy that’s impossible to resist. By day, I’ve relaxed on wide sandy beaches or joined locals for boat trips to Nisyros. The main square buzzes with laughter, music, and the inviting aroma of souvlaki on the grill.
When the sun sets, Kardamena really comes alive. Whether you’re sipping a sunset cocktail by the harbour, dancing at one of the lively bars, or enjoying a seafood dinner overlooking the Aegean, there’s an unbeatable sense of fun and freedom here. The beach clubs are perfect for those lazy, luxury days: order a fresh smoothie, sink into a shaded lounger, and just let the world slow down.
Kefalos: Authenticity and Tranquillity Await Kefalos is my go-to for authentic, unhurried Greek island life. Perched above the coast, this picture-perfect village feels blissfully removed from the everyday. I love winding through its narrow streets, discovering little bakeries, and chatting with friendly locals over strong coffee.
The beaches around Kefalos are some of my absolute favourites on Kos. Agios Stefanos stands out, where you can swim around ancient ruins in crystal-clear waters, and the nearby coves offer perfect privacy. For a treat, try a seafood lunch with a view—so simple, so delicious, and so unmistakably Greek.
Making Kos Your Own The beauty of Kos is how it welcomes you, whether you crave ancient wonders, culinary adventures, or beachside luxury. Each corner of the island offers its own special charms, and I’d love to help you uncover them all—tailored perfectly to how you like to travel.
