Stepping Into A Maldivian Daydream: My Stay At The St. Regis Vommuli Island

Kirsty Ralphson on 06 Jul 2025

From the very start, this was never going to be “just” a hotel stay. My two nights at St. Regis Vommuli felt like slipping into a beautifully choreographed dream: thoughtful service at every turn, exquisite design, and that sense of being completely and utterly looked after.

A Seamless, Luxurious Arrival

The experience really began at the seaplane terminal. After landing in Malé, we were met instantly by a member of the St. Regis team and whisked away by car, just five minutes to a private lounge. Even this short transfer felt curated: as we settled into the car, we were already choosing our breakfast and drinks from an iPad. Then a lovely touch: our butler appeared on screen to welcome us personally. It was such a small moment, but one that immediately made the whole journey feel more intimate and tailored.

At the lounge, iced coffees in hand, we sat watching seaplanes skim across the water, building that delicious sense of anticipation that only the Maldives can create.

The Magic Of The Seaplane

The 40 minute seaplane flight out to Vommuli was my first, and I could not have loved it more. There is something almost surreal about flying low over the atolls, watching tiny blushes of white sand ringed with electric-blue water appear beneath you.

From above, the Maldives looks like a scattering of turquoise jewels in an endless ocean. It sets the tone perfectly: you know you are heading somewhere very special.

Arrival In Paradise

As we stepped off the seaplane, the island unfolded like a film set: vivid water, lush greenery, and that unmistakable St. Regis style. We were greeted warmly by staff and management, a cold coconut in hand before we had even taken it all in.

There is a sense of calm, quiet confidence here. The welcome is warm, but never overbearing, and everything feels beautifully thought through.Arrival Drinks

The Overwater Villa: A Jaw-Dropping Sanctuary

We were taken straight to our overwater villa, and this is where the “wow” factor really hit. I have seen many Maldivian villas, but this one genuinely took my breath away.

Inside, the space is generous and incredibly well laid out:

  • A stylish sitting area with plenty of room to relax.
  • A large, sumptuous bed positioned to make the most of those ocean views.
  • A vast bathroom with soaking tub, rain shower and double vanities.
  • A separate dressing area plus a small corner dedicated to minibar amenities and treats.

Waiting for me was a warm, drawn bath and a handwritten note inviting me to simply “relax and enjoy.” After travelling, it was the most perfect welcome.

Outside, the terrace is one of the largest I have seen in the Maldives. It feels more like your own private decked island than a hotel balcony:

  • A beautiful private pool overlooking that classic Maldivian blue
  • Nets suspended over the water to lounge in
  • Generous sunbathing areas with loungers and day beds

If you are someone who values outdoor space and privacy, these villas deliver in every possible way.

Thoughtful Personal Touches

What truly lifted this stay from luxury to unforgettable were the personal touches woven into each day.

It started with the bath and welcome note, but it continued throughout our stay:

  • Sweet little messages written on the mirrors each morning and evening
  • The feeling that the staff genuinely knew who we were and what would make our stay special
  • A gift left on our last evening of a photo of us that was taken in the lounge before arriving.

Those quiet details, noticed but never shouted about, are what make you feel not just like a guest, but a valued individual.

Sunset Rituals At The Whale Bar

Every evening at St. Regis Vommuli, there is one place you simply have to be: The Whale Bar. Perched over the water, this stunning venue is the island’s social heart at sunset.

I cannot recommend it highly enough for pre-dinner drinks. The atmosphere is pitch-perfect:

  • A good buzz of other guests, but never crowded
  • Beautiful, chilled music
  • Delicious nibbles to accompany your drinks

One of the highlights is the champagne sabering, which adds a little theatre to the evening and feels wonderfully celebratory as the sky melts through shades of pink and gold. Watching the sun dip into the horizon from here, champagne in hand, feels like the definition of “Maldives magic”.

Dining: Every Meal A 10/10

For a relatively small island, the dining here really stands out. Each restaurant has its own identity and style, but there is a thread of excellence that runs through all of them:

  • Service that is polished yet genuinely warm
  • Beautifully presented dishes
  • Consistently high quality ingredients

A must-try is T•Pan for a teppanyaki experience that is both fun and refined. Sitting at the teppanyaki counter while the chef cooks in front of you, paired with sake, is a real evening highlight. It feels special, interactive, and perfectly in keeping with the resort’s elevated yet relaxed style.

For Couples, Friends, Families & Solo Travellers

What I loved most about St. Regis Vommuli is how versatile it is. It works beautifully for:

  • Couples looking for romance, privacy and indulgent dining.
  • Solo travellers who want to be cocooned in luxury yet still feel comfortable wandering to the bar or heading to dinner alone.
  • Friends seeking a stylish, pampering escape with great bar and dining options.
  • Families wanting the Maldivian dream without compromising on activities for children.

The children’s club is excellent, with plenty to keep little ones entertained, and the beach itself is a natural playground. This means parents can actually relax, knowing their children are happily occupied and safe.

Why This Island Belongs On Your Bucket List

In just two nights, St. Regis Vommuli managed to deliver what many resorts fail to create in a week: a true sense of experience.

From the personalised welcome at the seaplane terminal to the hand-drawn bath and mirror messages, from the warmth of the staff to the sunset rituals at the Whale Bar, everything is designed to make you feel special, seen and completely at ease.

This is not a place you simply “visit”. It is somewhere you feel. Somewhere that lingers with you long after you have left, every time you see a photograph of turquoise water or hear the word “Maldives”.

If the Maldives is on your radar, this island deserves to be right at the top of your wish list. It is luxurious without being stuffy, meticulously run yet wonderfully relaxed: a resort that truly understands what modern luxury travellers are looking for.

If you would like to experience St. Regis Vommuli for yourself, I would be delighted to help you design a stay that fits you perfectly, from the right villa and dining experiences to seaplane timings and special touches along the way.
