Why September is a good time to travel

Laura Bramfitt on 28 August 2025
Whilst it has been a few years since I have been able to take advantage of some extremely good value options for travelling in September… I wanted to share some thoughts on why I feel it’s a perfect month to consider your travel options and some recommendations on places to visit.

1. End of Summer Sunshine Escape

If you are chasing warmth, sea and sun-soaked scenery then there are a number of destinations to consider:

Valencia, Spain - lovely beaches, amazing paella and architectural wonders, with an average high of 28?°C

Algarve, Portugal - beautiful beaches and an average temperature of 27?°C temperatures making it both warm and serene

Crete, Greece – with a fabulous average temperature of 27?°C, then this destination is ideal for beach days, and exploring what the island has to offer

Dubrovnik, Croatia – medieval charm and a warmth of 18–25?°C makes this a good choice of destination

Valletta, Malta – Baroque beauty, sunny skies, and sea breezes with temperatures around 20–28?°C

Puglia, Italy – authentic villages, harvest-fresh cuisine, and sunshine, with fewer tourists

2. Cultural Immersion & City Breaks

September ushers in crisp air and buzzing streets, making it an ideal time for cultural exploration:

Porto, Portugal – riverside charm, port tastings, and mild weather (~24?°C)

Barcelona, Spain – Gaudí, tapas, warmth (18–26?°C), and the lively La Mercè festival

Athens – historic and sun-soaked Athens averages 20–29?°C

Budapest, Hungary – thermal baths, riverside views, and architecture shine in milder September weather (12–22?°C)

Prague, Czech Republic – Medieval streets, live classical music, and cultural festivals under comfortable skies (11–21?°C)

Sicily, Italy – Warm paths through ancient ruins, local cuisine, and fewer visitors

3. Cultural Immersion & City Breaks

For travellers craving more action and exploration:

Crete – hike the Samaria Gorge, explore ancient sites like Knossos, and enjoy active vineyard tours

Sardinia, Italy – beach bliss with hiking, mountains, and wine harvest festivity in balance

Camino de Santiago, Spain – a spiritual and physical journey with mild early autumn conditions (10–23?°C)

Final Takeaway: Why Book Now?

• The kids are back at school so your timing couldn’t be better for cost-effective spontaneity

• September brings sunshine without swelter, culture without crowds, and deals without delay

• Diversity of experiences means there’s something for every type of traveller (sun-lovers, culture-seekers, or adventure-chasers)

• Pre-Winter timeout before colder days return and the hustle of October half term and the Christmas chaos sets in!
