RiverView Conference 2026: Why River Cruising Is One of the Most Personal Ways to Explore the World

RiverView Conference 2026: Why River Cruising Is One of the Most Personal Ways to Explore the World

Samantha Price on 08 Mar 2026

This week I returned from the CLIA RiverView Conference 2026 in Amsterdam - three days dedicated entirely to the world of river cruising. It brought together travel professionals, cruise lines, and industry experts to explore how river cruising is evolving and why it continues to grow in popularity with travellers. But for me, events like this are about something far more valuable than simply hearing presentations or touring ships. They’re about understanding the experience properly. Walking the decks. Meeting the crews. Sitting down to dinner on board. Imagining which clients would love which ships - and why. Because the more deeply I understand a travel experience, the better I can match it to the right person. And if there was one theme that ran through the entire conference, it was this: The magic of travel happens when you truly know your client.

River Cruising Begins with Simplicity

One of the most striking things about river cruising is how effortless it feels.

Arrive in a city such as Amsterdam. Just a short walk from the main station, elegant ships are quietly waiting along the riverbanks.

You step on board, unpack once, and the journey begins.

Each morning you wake somewhere new – historic towns, vineyard-lined valleys, cultural capitals – without ever needing to repack a suitcase or navigate busy transport connections.

River cruising is not about rushing from place to place.

It is about letting the journey unfold.

That simplicity was clear during RiverView: ships moored side by side, guests stepping ashore for excursions, and in the evenings relaxed dinners, conversation and city lights reflecting on the water. Everything feels close, calm and beautifully easy.

Freedom to Explore at Your Own Pace

One common misconception about cruising is that everything is rigidly scheduled or perhaps even a little dull.

In reality, river cruising offers something many travellers are looking for: choice.

You can do as much or as little as you wish.

Some guests fill their days with guided excursions:

  • Exploring historic cities with knowledgeable local guides
  • Cycling through vineyards or along riverside paths
  • Tasting regional wines and local cuisine
  • Visiting castles, museums or UNESCO-listed old towns

Others prefer something slower:

  • A morning coffee on deck while watching castles drift past
  • An independent wander through cobbled streets and local markets
  • A quiet afternoon reading in a lounge with panoramic views

There is no pressure to do everything.

You simply choose the pace that suits you, knowing that thoughtfully organised excursions are there if and when you want them - and that a welcoming ship, attentive service and excellent meals are waiting when you return.

Comfort, Intimacy and the Joy of “Not Having to Organise”

River cruising is perfect for travellers who value comfort, intimacy and the joy of discovering remarkable destinations without the pressure of organising every detail.

Compared with larger ocean ships, river vessels feel smaller and more personal. You quickly recognise faces, the crew remember your preferences, and there is space to relax and unwind.

For many of my clients, the real luxury lies in:

  • Well-designed cabins, often with French balconies so the river landscape is right outside your window
  • Dining that reflects local flavours and regional specialities
  • Being docked close to the heart of cities and towns, so you can step ashore and start exploring
  • The reassurance that the itinerary, excursions and logistics have already been thoughtfully arranged

It is travel without the stress of planning every detail and yet it still leaves space for curiosity, discovery and independence.

Every Traveller Is Different – And Every Ship Has Its Own Personality

One of my biggest takeaways from the conference was just how different each river ship feels.

Some focus heavily on food and wine.
Others lean into culture and history.
Some attract active travellers who want cycling tours, hikes or even more adventurous experiences such as e-biking or zip lining in certain destinations.

Others are perfect for those seeking calm, comfort and scenic sailing.

Every client travels differently. Some enjoy a schedule full of activity. Others appreciate calm, elegance and the reassurance that everything has already been thoughtfully arranged.

In many ways, what I do is a little like matchmaking.

Every traveller has their own style and every river cruise has its own personality.

When those two things align, the experience becomes something truly special.

During RiverView, every ship I stepped onto helped me imagine which clients would fall in love with it. Each one was unique in its style, offerings and atmosphere.

I came away feeling more strongly than ever that there really is a river cruise for everyone.

The Ships I Experienced in Amsterdam

During the conference I was fortunate enough to spend two nights on board two very different,  and equally impressive, river ships:

  • MS Geoffrey Chaucer
  • VIVA Enjoy

Each had its own personality, style and ideal traveller.

MS Geoffrey Chaucer – Riviera Travel

The Geoffrey Chaucer offers an experience that feels relaxed, elegant and quietly refined.

Riviera Travel is known for its strong focus on cultural itineraries and excellent value, with a style that feels classic but comfortable rather than overly formal. Their ships sail many of Europe’s most iconic rivers including the Rhine, Danube, Rhône and Douro, visiting charming towns, vineyard valleys and historic cities.

On board the Geoffrey Chaucer, the atmosphere felt welcoming and sociable. There are spacious lounges with panoramic windows, a stylish restaurant and thoughtfully designed cabins, many with French balconies that bring the river landscape directly into your room.

Riviera’s approach centres on immersive excursions and knowledgeable guides, making it particularly appealing for travellers who want to truly understand the destinations they visit without feeling rushed.

It is exactly the sort of ship I can picture for clients who enjoy history, culture and a relaxed but well-organised travel experience.

VIVA Enjoy – VIVA Cruises

VIVA Enjoy had a very different feel: modern, vibrant and contemporary.

VIVA Cruises is a newer name in river cruising and has quickly gained attention for its stylish ships and all-inclusive concept. Their itineraries cover many of Europe’s most scenic rivers including the Rhine, Danube, Moselle and Main.

On board, the atmosphere felt lively and modern, with sleek interiors, open dining spaces and a strong emphasis on relaxed luxury.

The all-inclusive model typically includes meals, drinks and many onboard elements, which makes the whole experience feel wonderfully seamless and easy to budget for.

VIVA Enjoy struck me as a fantastic option for travellers who appreciate contemporary design, a social atmosphere and the ease of having almost everything included.

Why River Cruising Continues to Grow

After three days in Amsterdam, it was easy to see why river cruising is becoming increasingly popular.

For many travellers it offers a perfect balance:

  • Elegant, comfortable ships
  • Remarkable destinations right outside your cabin
  • Thoughtfully organised excursions
  • Exceptional, friendly service
  • The simplicity of knowing everything has been carefully arranged

It is an ideal choice for those who value comfort and ease, but still want a strong sense of place, culture and connection to the destinations they visit.

My Biggest Takeaway from Amsterdam

If there is one thing the conference reinforced, it is this:

The right travel experience starts with understanding the traveller.

Are you passionate about food and wine?
Do you crave history, art and culture?
Do you want to be active and outdoors?
Or would you prefer calm, comfort and beautiful scenery from the deck?

River cruising can offer all of these things, but choosing the right ship and itinerary makes all the difference.

That is where experience and knowledge matter: placing the right client on the right ship, with the right style of journey, so that it feels effortless, personal and unforgettable.

Curious About River Cruising?

After spending time on board, meeting the cruise lines and exploring the ships first-hand at the CLIA RiverView Conference 2026, I have come away with a much clearer sense of which river cruises suit which travellers.

If river cruising has been on your travel wish list, feel free to get in touch. I would love to help you discover which river, ship and itinerary might suit you best, and match you with a journey that feels like it was designed just for you.

Sometimes the perfect trip starts with a simple conversation.
